If someone or something was in danger, would you do anything to help? Well the world's rainforest are currently disappearing at a rate of 6,000 acres every hour which is equivalent to almost 3,500 football fields. If you have been unaware, rainforests are well on their way to extinction. Rainforest once covered 14% of the earth's surface; now they cover about 6% and experts say the remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Commercial logging is the main cause of rainforest destruction which is done by large companies seeking wealth. When these rainforests are cut down, the plants and animals that live in the forest are destroyed, and some species are at risk of being made extinct. Over a longer term, deforestation of tropical rainforest can have a huge impact affecting global climate and biodiversity. We need the rainforests to produce oxygen and clean the atmosphere to help us breath. Rainforest also help us with many valuable medicinal plants and resources like rubber, chocolate, and chicle which is used to make chewing gum. Many people believe the rainforests are a storehouse of unknown treasures that can help improve our life's but as a result of deforestation we may never find them. For example, in the future a plant may be a source of a cure to a deadly disease. As the tropical rainforest are being destroyed, our quality of life is being risked. To start fixing this problem we can start by spreading the word and getting people to realize the harm that is being done to the rainforests. Get involved in the community and educate others. Use renewable items and recycle so that we don't have to take away more resources from the rainforest. Wood will always be needed to build houses and buildings but the companies that are responsible for deforestation destroy the rainforests at a staggering rate and don't bother to plant new trees and plants.
