Curb Records Analysis
Curb Records, celebrating 50 years of running since its opening in 1963 by a man named Mike Curb. During that 50 years Mike Curb and Curb records have accumulated four hundred thirty two number one records, one thousand five hundred and fourteen top ten records , and four thousand five hundred and eighteen charted records resulting from being one of the most successful independent labels to come about. Through their early years in the running they worked with artists such as Eric Burdon & War, the Stone Poneys, Sammy Davis Jr., The Osmond Family, The Righteous Brothers, Exile, Solomon Burke, GLoria Gaynor, the Hondells, the Arrows, Roy Orbison, Shaun Cassidy, Debby Boone, the Electric Flag, the Sylvers, and the Four Seasons. In 1969 Curb had the great opportunity to join MGM records and have even more success with artists such as Kenny Rodgers, Hank Williams Jr., Don Gibson, Mel Tillis, Ray Stevens, and Eddy Arnold. A decade later moving into the 1980’s Curb Records was responsible for signing artists such as The Judds, Lyle Lovett, Don & Phil Everly, Desert Rose Band, Sawyer Brown, Jeffrey Steele’s band Boy Howdy, Ronnie McDowell, Hal Ketchum and The Righteous Brothers, and The Bellamy Brothers. As an independent record label they were doing very well in the 80’s. Going into the 90’s is when they really started to pick up. The main artist that made Curb Records much money would be Tim McGraw. By the twenty first century Curb had “one of the strongest country rosters in Nashville,” with artists such as Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Hank Williams Jr., Wynonna, Clay Walker, Rodney Atkins, Trick Pony, and LeAnn Rimes.[i]

Strengths: The owner of Curb Records, Mike Curb, “is one of the most prominent figures in the music/entertainment world and presides over his own independent record label that is recognized as one of the most successful in music industry today.” When Mike Curb started the label he was still currently in College attending California State University. Mike is not only a label executive, but also is a producer/writer. Writing Hank Williams Jr’s first hit single, “All For The Love Of Sunshine,” and won BMI awards for that song, and for composing the theme song to Clint Eastwood’s motion picture, “Kelly’s Heroes.” He also was awarded Billboard producer of the year.[ii] Running his label for 50 years and building all the experience he has since Curb Records has first opened is a very good strength to the label because of Mike’s consistent success with producing, writing, and signing good artists that sell records.

In my opinion, the biggest artist on Curb Records’ roster, Tim McGraw, is a strength to this label. They signed McGraw in the early 90’s, which now has accumulated 10+ albums in the Billboard Top 200 including Not a Moment Too Soon, A Place in the Sun, All I Want, Set This Circus Down, Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors, Let it Go, and many others. Even more than that number in singles for the Billboard Top 100 Singles including songs such as Indian Outlaw, Don’t Take the Girl, I like it, I love it, Can’t Be Ready Gone, It’s Your Love, One of These Days, Where the Green Grass Grows, For a Little While, Please Remember Me, Something like That, My Best Friend, and many others.[iii] He is also number 19 in “Top 40 Money Makers 2012” making Nine million, three hundred thirty five thousand, two hundred fifty eight dollars for the year of 2012.[iv] And you can bet Curb is seeing similar profits from Tim McGraw.

Curb’s christian division of the label is very successful with artists such as Natalie Grant, Selah, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Fernando Ortega, Plumb, Nate Sallie, Charity, Jamie Slocum, Johnathan Pierce and Michael English.Natalie Grant, a christian music artist from Curb Records is making some noise in the contemporary christian industry being named Female Vocalist of the year in the Dove awards....
