Formal Analysis
This is a painting of the Spanish painter Francisco Goya entitled El 3 de Mayo de 1808 (The Third of May, 1808). The work was painted in 1814. It is an Oil on canvas and it is dimensions are 8’9” x 3’4”. It is located at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Spain. It is not known very well for what purpose, although every indication says that Goya's intention was to capture the struggle of the Spanish people against French domination. May 2 was the start of the uprising of many protests against Napoleon's forces in the city of Madrid. This day was the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence. The painting was painted in 1814, six years after the uprising. It says that this work was part of a set of 2 paintings.
The work is set in a real space and also reflects a real situation that happened during that period. We can see that it is scale, as the sizes of the prisoners and the military are very even, it also has very real characteristics, you can distinguish the facial features on the people being executed. On the other hand the French military are painted as killing machines, their silhouettes are impersonal because they have no face, all in the same approach. In the painting the lines stand out, these are present on the lamp, on the guns of the French military and the silhouette of the buildings that are in the background. To achieve some effects spots were placed, these can be seen in the blood of dead people who are on the floor, they were also used to give effect to the hills found in the back.
Goya uses warm colors like black, red, brown and tan. You can say that cool colors are seen, like white on the shirt and on the lamp and grays, but the predominant colors are warm. Some colors show shade, as colors like blue-green are used, this can be seen on

The lines in this work of art are of a large variety. On the right side of the painting a lot of the objects are horizontal. The woman though is sitting up vertically, along with the flame. There are a few diagonal lines also, for example; the position of the woman’s head, one of her legs, and her arm resting on the skull. Everything in this painting is realistic and the shapes are organic. The texture in this painting is two-dimensional. Almost all of the objects seem to be smooth, for example; the books, the wall, the table, the woman’s skin and dress, and so on. Warm colors are used in this painting. The value in this shows the lightest point being the center and from that going outward, it gets darker.…

The use of light and shadow are what catches the viewer's eye first as the face of St. Peter and the woman are illuminated by what is said to be a fireplace in the background, though not in view. This effect gives the idea that these are the two most important figures in the painting and the story revolves around these two figures. The figure of the soldier seems to be relatively less important due to the fact that the apparent fireplace only illuminates the back of the armor of which he is wearing. The detail of the soldier's face is hidden in his own shadow and is only outlined by the reflective light from the face of the woman, further demonstrating his importance. The light aids in the telling of the story as one can see that the woman's eyes are facing the soldier…

José Clemente Orozco painted the mural Dive Bomber and Tank in front of guest at The Museum of Modern Art in 1940. The work of art was made in honor of the exhibition, “Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art.” Despite being during the time of the Second World War and the nature of the mural, Orozco stated that the mural had no political symbolism. Orozco was expressing his interpretation of the devastating effects war can have on a soul and hence goes on to use mostly a cool palette, consisting of majority black and gray, to captivate that message.…

Georges Seurat’s painting of “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte -1884'” depicts tranquilize people located on the island of La Grande Jatte. Looking closer into the background there are soldiers and regular looking people in the back with one typical guy with higher class people in the foreground. It like a unanimity between social class to enjoy a sunny day on a island. Looking closely into the painting there are tiny strokes of lines creating leaves on the ground and on the tree, but also everywhere creating texture. The overlapping creates space and every person are very different from each other creating variety.…

The painting is 39(1//2) by 53(5/8) inches, using oil paints on canvas and was created in the year 1640. When one first looks at the painting as it hangs on the wall, they would see a man, Saint John, that appears to be writing on some type of paper sitting at the foreground of the painting in bright yellow and red clothing. The reason that the audience can tell this man is St. John is because the eagle that sits beside him, which is the symbol of the Saint John evangelist, and also the halo that hovers over the head of the man in the painting is a good indicator. As Saint John sits on the ground, he has a sheet of paper in his hands as well as some sheets lying next to him on the ground. The reason that you can tell that he is writing something and not just reading it is because although it maybe small, on the ground next to him is a pen and some ink that look as though they have been use. With the way that Poussin painted Saint John sitting and the features on his face it almost feels as if Saint John was in a deep thought or puzzled on what to write. Although many people describe this scene to be a very violent and emotional scene Poussin does a great job making the scene look calm and very peaceful to its audence.…

Today’s technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate. However, as tech focused companies continue to profit and expand, their emphasis on innovation for the masses diminishes. Manufacturers are expected to release one or more new flagship products every year, in turn implicating an incentive to place aside supporting older generations in favor of quarterly profits. Planned obsolescence is the idea of a consumer product being purposely made with the intent of being replaced and becoming obsolete. Ultimately, my question would be whether planned obsolescence is a necessary step in the advancement of technology.…

Goya and Picasso both depicted actual events, though their reasons for painting the scene were greatly different. Goya requested official permission to paint the events of the Third of May, 1808 six years after the executions in response to a challenge about his sympathies during the French occupation (Grove). In 1808, Spain had been conquered by Napoleon, which was a welcome change as the citizens thought France would bring about reforms (Stockstad 954). On May 2, it was rumored that the French planned to kill the royal family and the people rioted. Hundreds of Spaniards were executed before dawn the next morning (Stockstad 954). Picasso, on the other hand, was commissioned to create a painting for the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World's Fair (Stoner). On April 27th, 1937, the Basque village in northern Spain was chosen for bombing practice by Hitler's burgeoning war machine, and the hamlet was pounded with high-explosive and incendiary bombs for over three hours; Guernica burned for three days. Sixteen hundred civilians were killed or wounded. When news of the massacre reached Paris, millions protested. Eyewitness reports filled the front pages of Paris papers. Picasso, upon seeing the stark black and white photographs, quickly sketched the first images of Guernica (Stoner).…
