Reading Skills Chart Word Recognition (definition only here) - The ability to go from the printed form of a work to the spoken form. Sight Words - The ability to recognize a word immediately without analysis. I would put sight words on flashcards and drill the children. Context Clues - The ability to use the words around an unknown word to figure out what it is or means. I would write a sentence on the board and have the children try to figure out what a word means based on clues in the sentence. Phonics - The ability to associate speech sounds with letters. I would write a word on the board and have the children sound out the letters. Structural Analysis - The ability to decode words by using your knowledge of root words and affixes.
Read a story and have children raise their hand when they hear a certain sound. Dictionary Study - The ability to determine the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word.I would read from a list of words and ask the children what it means if they don't know I would have them look up the words. Meaning Vocabulary - The ability to associate the printed form of a word with its meaning. I would write a simple sentence and then have the children write a sentence using more interesting words. Comprehension - The ability to answer questions about a story, associate the ideas the author put into print with the ideas stored in the reader’s schema, build meaning from print, and recall information from a passage read. I would read a story to the children then ask them questions about the story and what they learned from the story. Literal Comprehension - The ability to recall ideas directly stated in what was read. I would read a story and have the children tell me what it said. Higher-Order Comprehension - The ability to infer information, draw a logical conclusion from what was read, and ability to read beyond the words in a story.
