Seaport Infrastructure Capacity: A Case Study with the
Port of Guangzhou

Abstract
The report is prepared for TP5027 and serves the purpose of understanding basic concepts and evaluation of seaport capacity management. Port of
Guangzhou, China is selected. The port is among the top 10 container ports of the world and ranked 6th among ports in China in 2013. A simple capacity and throughput analysis is carried out in the report and the estimated capacity is then compared with actual throughput. Estimation of port hinder land is also provided.
1. Introduction
The port of Guangzhou is located on the Pearl River about 125 Kilometers northwest of Hong Kong in the People’s Republic of China. It is a major seaport and South China’s most comprehensive port. The Port of
GuangZhou is an important transport and economic hub for the Pearl River
Delta region. World Port Source (2006) The Port of GuangZhou has a history that can be dated back to 1000BC. It witnesses the revolution of society and vicissitudes of dynasties while remaining one of the major ports in China.
In the Qing Dynasty, between 1757 and 1840, 13 trade brokers and agents designated by the Qing government monopolized the country’s foreign trade after the Qing government?s order to leave Guangzhou Port as the country?s

In 1918, Sun Yat-sen proposed the construction of a southern China hub port in Huangpu Guangzhou in his book the International Development of
China. In the 1930s, the construction of Huangpu Port Area began. In the
1970s, the construction of Xingang Port Area began.In the 1990s, the construction of Xinsha Port Area began. In 1999, the Port of Guangzhou became the second port in Mainland China breaking the annual cargo throughput
