Lab Report DFA –Key Punch

Introduction
In this laboratory, we are required to choose one existing product to modify its design for assembly. In order to prevent complication, we have chosen a hole-puncher with 13 parts which is reasonable for making improvement in assembly process.

In this laboratory, we used DFA software to analysis different parts of the hole -puncher in order to reduce production cost, time to market and improve product quality. After the laboratory, we have successfully made some improvements for the assembly of the hole-puncher.

There are total 13 parts with 7 species in the original key punch:
1. Base
2. Arm

3. Puncher

4. Spring

5. Top

6. Screw

7. Plastic Cover

Improvement Method
In this laboratory, we apply DFA in order to pursue three goals—reducing production cost, time to market as well as improving product quality.
In our project, we focus on reducing part counts and time for assembly.

Reducing Part Counts
For reducing part counts, the reasons for us to do so are to ensure better quality, inventory control and help to reduce cost.
If fewer parts are involved in the production, there is less chance for occurrence of defect problem. Furthermore, it can help to reduce inventory problem such as leading time and shortage and thus has the better inventory control.

There are three steps to check whether the part counts can be reduced. The first criteria is whether the part is movable; second one is whether the part has to be made from different material than the other parts and the final one is whether the part required for assembly or disassembly. If all the answers are no, the part’s function can be combined with another existing part.

A number DFMA implementation methodologies have been developed, the most well known of which is the DFA method by Boothroyd and Dewhurst2. These methods allow the designer to quantitatively assess their design early in the development process. It is important that the implementation of DFMA is as straight forward as possible and delivers feedback that is usable to the designer.…

There are three options that lie to overcome the problem of innovation. The first option to consider is automated materials handling for the assembly. With this course of action the company takes concern in three different areas of operation; how should the assembly process, the automatic storage system and the production control system be organized? With this option the company figured that the automated materials handling, providing the right materials to the right place at the right time, would reduce assembly time to just 60 hours to meet their competitive priority and the customers product expectations.…

Plants also gain efficiencies when they become large enough to fully utilize dedicated resources for tasks such as materials handling.
