OPERATING SYSTEM FUNDAMENTALS

This section explains the various operating systems available today and identifies major personal computer operating systems. Although Microsoft Windows is the dominant operating system in the personal computer market today, there are other operating systems that can run on various desktops and laptop. These operating systems vary in their popularity, system requirements and features.

3.1 Microsoft Windows

Microsoft window is the single most popular and widely deployed operating system on both desktop computers and server systems in the world today. The various versions of windows all feature a graphical user interface, support for a wide range of applications and devices, a minimum of 32 bit processing, native networking support, and a large suit of built in applications and accessories such as Internet Explorer, Web Browser. Windows currently come preinstalled on many personal computers sold commercially.

3.2 Microsoft Windows Versions

Microsoft windows come in several different versions and revision levels for use on both personal computers and network servers. The most recent client version of Windows is Windows 8; the most recent mobile client version is Windows Phone 8; the most recent server version is Windows Server 2012.

3.3 Current Versions

3.3.1 Windows 8

The latest version of the Windows operating system and was released on October 26, 2012.
• Windows 8 -Windows 8 succeeds Windows 7 Home Premium but is simply called "Windows 8"
• Windows 8 Pro -Windows 8 Pro succeeds Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users; it includes all the features of Windows 8. Additional features include operating as a Remote Desktop server, the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain. Windows Media Center functionality will be available only for Windows 8 Pro, as a paid "Media Pack."
