CHAPTER 1: COMPANY’S BACKGROUND
OLDTOWN WHITE COFFEE (OTWC) was first established in Ipoh, Perak in 1999. However it all started with ‘White Café’ back in 1958. Back then it was just a simple ‘kedai kopi’ that serves homemade coffee for Chinese in Ipoh. The co-founders and now, the Executive Directors of OTWC, Mr Goh Ching Mun and Mr Tan Say Yap decided to mix their own blend of 3-in-1 instant white coffee to compete with other coffee brewers in Ipoh. (E.g. Sin Yoon Loong White Coffee, and Kongs White Coffee (M) Sdn. Bhd.) This has pushes OTWC forward to become the best producer of high quality white coffee in the Malaysian food services industry.
OTWC is now the largest ‘kopitiam’ restaurant chain in Malaysia. This might not have happened to OTWC without the supported by their now Managing Director, Mr Lee Sew Heng that helps them in implementing their vision, mission and strategies of OTWC as a whole. In 2005, OTWC has expanded into the food service sector with the opening of a chain of café outlets based on the traditional Ipoh coffee shop setting and ambience under the brand name “Old Town White Coffee”. OTWC is targeting on completing its chain of café outlets to 211 outlets by year 2012. OTWC now exports its instant beverage mixes to more than 10 countries worldwide and plans to expand its café outlet network in the region.

Ipoh "white" coffee is a popular coffee drink which originated in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The coffee beans are roasted with palm-oil margarine, and the resulting coffee is served with condensed milk. [1] The term "white coffee" originates from the literal translation of its Chinese name, which was introduced in the 19th century by Chinese migrants who came to work in the local tin mines.[citation needed]
Traditionally, Malaysian style "black" coffee roast (Kopi-O) is produced by roasting the beans with sugar, margarine and wheat. [2] "White"

One of the more disturbing incidents in American History is the Jonestown Massacre that occurred on November 18th, 1978 in Georgetown, Guyana. It was the largest loss of civilian life in a non-natural tragedy until the attacks of September 11th, 2001. 909 lives were lost under the hand of Jim Jones who had cultivated a following of people over twenty-plus years. Jim Jones started his first church, named The Peoples Temple, in the mid-1950’s in Indianapolis, Indiana (I). From the beginning, he preached a message of socialism and communism. Upon scrutiny of his tactics and teachings, he moved The Peoples Temple to Redwood Valley, California in 1965 and shortly after headquarters were set up in San Francisco. The Peoples Templecame into the public eye when eight defectors and negative media spoke out against the church. Jim Jones decided at this point to move his church to Georgetown, Guyana where the chilling events of November 18th would eventually unfold.…

A past religious settlement established by Reverend Jim Jones in late 1978 provides examples of persuasive tricks known as fallacies. The majority of the followers in the masses were individuals who were victims of discrimination seeking a better and more positive outlook on life, signifying Jones' selection of people. Fallacies are formed within arguments causing it to weaken by indicating a flaw in reasoning. Jim Jones utilized unique and persuasive tactics, which brought him about a thousand followers, all desperate and in need of a leader who provided them with what they believed as faith healing. However, these people carried traits of emotional vulnerability, causing them to overlook the errors within their leader's bold statements and arguments. Jones created the Peoples Temple known as Jonestown that began with immense hope and aspiration for the people, but ended in tragedy. The foundation of the tragic event was built upon Jones and his multiple arguments, which pertained common fallacies. The fallacies created by Jones consisted of appeals to popularity, ignorance, authority, tradition, incomplete comparisons, and false dichotomies. The mixture of various strategies were enforced upon these weak individuals; though unfortunate, a leader with psychiatric issues achieves success through his uses of persuasion and leads nearly a thousand people to self-destruction.…

According to a coffee history legend, an Arabian shepherd named Kaldi found his goats dancing joyously around a dark green leafed shrub with bright red cherries in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Kaldi soon determined that it was the bright red cherries on the shrub that were causing the peculiar euphoria and after trying the cherries himself, he learned of their powerful effect. The stimulating effect was then exploited by monks at a local monastery to stay awake during extended hours of prayer and distributed to other monasteries around the world. Coffee was born. After year 1600, it started reaching the nearby countries like India through smuggling practices. The Turks first adopted coffee as a drink. This is how coffee was popularized as a drink in the rest of the world and people started planting coffee as a crop.…
