The Bond Between Men “Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. The shade climbed up the hills toward the top. On the sand banks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray sculptured stones”. In the story Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck writes about the adventures and struggles of two best friends on a mission to find a better life. Steinbeck describes each character in depth to give the reader a very coherent example. John Steinbeck effectively conveys the idea of friendships last forever and that hardships in life do not. Steinbeck uses imagery to show the Character foils. “The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him; small, strong hands, slender arms, thin and bony nose. Behind him walked his opposite, huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little the way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely.” This quote talks about lennie being the giant character and George being the small character. Lennie could be considered slow but in the story Steinbeck never directly tells the reader. In this quote they compare Lennie to a bear dragging his paws, they use this metaphor to show how Lennie might be big, clumsy and unintelligent. George is the exact opposite of Lennie. George is small, and very sharp with his remarks. George is very intelligent and astute. Steinbeck even says “behind him walked his opposite” this shows how diverse the two are. This quote shows exactly how contrasting the two characters are, The way Steinbeck describes them he essentially uses a word for George and then uses the antonym for Lennie. Steinbeck uses quotes to show the character's relationship and how it is the ideal male relationship. “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family.
