RETURNING TO SCHOOL Page 2

Becoming a mother at a young age was very stressful at times. I wanted to continue my education but it was hard being a single mother. So returning to school was a must for me, but the question was when? Returning to school was a struggle, but eventually I got on the right mind frame and became focused after getting my daughter more than half way through school herself. Now I am attending school. I just want to share with you briefly the journey it took for me to return. Between the years of 1997 when my daughter was born and 2002, we struggled to make ends meet so I had to work two jobs just to take care of my daughter. My mother watched her as much as she could and when she couldn’t I tried to pay a baby sitter. So in order to pay the bills and have a place to live there was no time for an education for mommy. And at the time I really don’t think I cared. However in 2001 I and my mother discussed me returning to school when my daughter started kindergarten in the fall of 2002. I told her I would consider it if she would babysit. We never discussed it again. November 2002 my mother got into a serious life battling car accident that put her into a coma for a month in a half. It turned my world upside down. My whole life went numb, and I felt as if I was watching a lifetime movie and I was in it. She was never the same, short-term memory loss, incompetent, and never walked again. My mother struggled for 5 years and finally passed in 2007. Those 5 years were the worst years of my life to see her struggle. But at the same time I was relieved that she didn’t have to anymore. RETURNING TO SCHOOL Page 3 Early 2008, I and my sisters discussed me returning to school and I told them if I was to return it would have to be at home online because it’s more convenient for me. So I set myself a goal and told myself that when my daughter starts high school I will start my research on finding a good accredited college to attend online and possibly go for my associates. But as my daughter struggled in school and wasn’t doing well in certain areas I felt once again that I would have to put my goals/dreams on hold and focus on her. Because unlike me, I wanted her to learn from my mistakes and further her education at the right time and not prolong anything like I did. By my daughter’s sophomore year in high school, she started to inspire me more to return to school. She was getting interested in going to college herself and would ask me if and when I would ever attend college as well. She motivated me to put my goals back on the table again and take another step forward. Then in 2012, Ironically Ashford University called my sister who already attends college elsewhere and asked her question about attending their college. She replied, “no, but I can refer you to someone who might be interested.” That phone call changed my life and is still changing it now. My mother and daughter really have inspired me to further my education. And I think my mother passing was a big eye opener for me to step out of my shell and explore my opportunities. As for my daughter, she more or less confirmed it and gave me the okay in “Returning to school”. It took me 15 years to do it, now I just have to keep it going.

Her alarming accident happened only four months prior to me starting high school in a completely new environment. Not only was I terrified to start in a new school with new surroundings but now I needed to worry about my grandmother’s condition. My nerves were at an all-time peak in my life and it was a matter of time before I would have a mental breakdown. Every morning for two months I would pray for her recovery and thank God for giving her another day to live. After what felt like years of uneasiness and concern, my grandmother was finally released from one of the many hospitals she had been admitted to. My family and I could tell that although her speech and short term memory would never be the same, she would finally be coming back home. Her traumatizing experience made me come to the realization of two things, my future occupation and how important family is.…

I decided to return to school for personal reasons. Returning to school is something that I have thought of doing for a very long time. I guess you could just say that I have been very lazy and procrastinated for a long time. I tried to go to college right out of high school but it did not work out. I don’t think I was quite prepared to make that big step. I was headed down the wrong path and decided it was time to do something with my life. I knew it would help me to grow as a person. I now find myself in sort of the same situation. I’ve been a cashier for 18yr and now I work hard every day loading a Goodwill trailer to support my kids I know that without a collage education that most likely will not happen. I also want to be a positive influence to my children and show him how important education is. I want to be a good influence to my son and daughter but most of all I want to better myself as a person. Plus most of all I know in 4 to 5 yr. my fibromyalgia will not be getting any better. By that time my R.A. in my back will be getting bad, I still have 8 yrs. left to support my little girl. I know I can’t do it working on…

Deciding to return to school was not a choice for me, but a requirement. I’ve wanted to further my career for years. Life happened so I had to put school on the back burner. After having children and pushing the importance of education to them I knew that I had no choice but to lead by example. I want them to know that it’s possible. Being a leader in my house and at work I have always lead with the motto “I’ll never ask anything of you that I have not done or isn’t willing to do myself”. Staying true to that I’m here and ready to thrive.…

Returning to school is hard, but returning at age 43 is the hardest decision that I have ever made in my life. Growing up I always felt that I was never smart enough to advance myself in anything, yet alone school. After working many jobs and not climbing fast enough or having the required qualifications for opportunities; I have decided to return to school because I want to make a better life not only for myself, but also for my family. I do not want to have any regrets about not finishing school or “ I should have done this “ while I was younger. I want to be able to provide for my present and future family, and not being able to give them the things they need and want is a big concern of mine.…

After careful thought and consideration, I made the desire to return to school into a realistic goal. I had finally come to the conclusion, that it was time to take control of my circumstances, rather than continue to let my circumstances control me. For the first time in twenty years, I have a window of opportunity to fit a degree program into my daily schedule. Returning to school had always been a desire of mine, but in the past, I did not think I had the time or the money to pursue a degree. I was a single mother, I was working all of the time, my children were very young, and half of my wages went to daycare expenses.…

At the time being a single mother was not easy. I had work, bills, and my child to worry about, definitely no time for school. My stuffed crab was once fluffy and bright red. It’s now flattened and faded – something that 10+ years of being wedged between the dashboard and windshield of a car will do. It travels with me wherever my car goes and reminds me of one of the first walks on the beach I took with my husband 15 or so years ago when we were first dating. The crab itself isn’t anything spectacular as stuffed animals go, but the story behind him is a pretty good one.…

As Bernard M. Baruch once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.” I was unaware that my opinion of myself was more meaningful than my peer’s opinion. I had a rough time figuring out who I was and who I wanted to be in my first few years of high school. The first chance I got to poke the popular bubble was taken, giving me one shot to embed myself into an exotic, unknown social group. What I didn’t know was that this social group made me feel like an outsider.…

Waking up during winter break on a rather chilly morning, twenty degrees and it was precisely 9:00 a.m. and I was more than ready to drive to Quincy, Illinois, hop on an airplane, and head to my hometown Klamath Falls, Oregon. When I got to the airport I thought to myself what a phenomenal day this will be. I thought wrong. I was faced with the challenges of bad weather, delays, and the reality that my brother was becoming detached from the family; this day became a day where everything went wrong.…
