My View on University Ranking
My View on University Ranking

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that university ranking has gained increasing popularity --- institutions home and abroad are always interested in it; newspapers and magazines are fond of carrying the news. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to some problems never thought of. Confronted with the dilemma, should we carry on the practice? When it comes to this question, people’s views vary from one to another. People who support ranking have their reasons. They are convinced that it can stimulate people, teachers and students alike, to work harder so that they can climb on the ladder or at least maintain their position. In this way, universities can produce more talents and knowledge demanded by our society. Also, supporters of university ranking maintain that it can act as a guide for employers when they decide where to find right employees.. But others may not agree. These people would argue that university ranking might force universities to care more about their position in the ranking but not about research that they are expected to do. For instance, it is often reported that some professors spend more time in bribing than in labs in order to have an edge in the fierce competition. Another good case in point is that some scholars even sacrifice their integrity to plagiarize under the pressure of “publish or perish”. Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. As far as I am concerned, we might as well stop the practice for the good of universities and society. Universities are a place for free academic study. Only when scholars are free to in their pursuits, can they make contribution to

The main argument of this article is that it doesn’t matter who comes out first place in a certain ranking, it all depends on who’s doing the ranking and on what variables the ranking is taking place. Malcolm Gladwell believes that a ranking can be heterogenous (diverse in content), as long as it doesn’t try to be too comprehensive (including all or nearly all aspects of something). He also believes that a ranking can be comprehensive as long as it doesn’t try to measure things that are heterogeneous. Also even if the ranking is trying to be both heterogeneous and comprehensive at the same time, it’ll only work properly if the subjects being ranked are similar.…

Young argue in this journal the situation of university investigation and its different facets. Since 1950s, university research is facing many changes. Some changes are positive, like the expansion of population going to university, but others are negative, like the interference of governments and industry. The view of the author of what a university should be is that of teachers and students engaged, mainly, in knowledge that will profit society not only with a short economic gain. History probes that since the beginning there have been forces trying to affect the outcomes of university research. Before it was religion, but now is the industry who wants to put its influence in universities. Things started to change in university research after the World War II. Research funds were no more available through departmental resources, but through governments and industry. In this context, the report of Bush stated that the government should provide support for research, but also that scientist should freely investigate. At the end of the last century, many countries had granting councils. This model supposed more money for research, but also prioritized scientific research over art or social sciences. As the needs of universities increased, more detached were administrators from faculty, and more open were researchers to be transformed in entrepreneurs. In Canada, after an agreement, universities are increasing their commercialization in a way that makes Young wonder if this will be considered for tenure as much as teaching and researching. With this situation, some faculty members are more open to become entrepreneurs. This is putting in risk the nature of universities and the future of academic medicine. For example, in mild to moderate depression, both drugs and psychotherapy weight the same, but because of the push and the funds of pharmaceutical companies, there are more research centred in drugs. This situation could bring great misrepresentation in the areas…

Canada is year after year ranked below developing countries in the academic ranking yet they have the most facilities and the biggest education budget. If this issue is taken care, there would be increase in the ranking position. However, it should be noted that our poor ranking is simply because of the poor grades of minorities as we have a large number of minorities. So, their poor grades weigh heavily on the general Canadian ranking so this issue should not be taken trivially. We should tackle this issue rather than we throw out money on other things, we should invest it in education so our future generations have more to work with. General public should show more interest to change the system and especially people associated or linked with the Canadian educational system. Students should also take part in this so that they can give their perspective and the issue might be looked at differently. Student’s perspective can help open out the situation and things like classroom environment, student behavior and teacher communication can be understood more thoroughly. Often, problems go unsolved because they are not acknowledged in a helpful manner and to the right people. If the problem was made aware to the “victims” themselves, they might take extra-precaution to not fall victim to…

Published in 2017, David F. Labaree’s book A Perfect Mess: The Unlikely Ascendancy of American Higher Education analyzes exactly what the title suggests. Across the United States of America there is a total of 2,618 accredited four-year universities/ colleges (the words are synonymous throughout Labaree’s writing, a trend I will continue in this review). Within the first page Labaree states that this system was never really supposed to work. He then continues the book by showing the ways American higher education was able to grow into the successful system it is today. During his argument Labaree wavers back and forth on supporting the idea that public universities are strong enough to stand on their own without state funding.…

Since the early 1900s, the SAT test has been administered each year to high school students in the United States of America (College board 1). The SAT is a standardized test based on a students’ proficiency in math reading and writing. In recent years questions has been raised about whether or not the SAT test can be used to measure any high school students’ skills. It has been argued that colleges should not use a simple four-hour test determine someone’s intelligence or future success in college over his/her high school curriculum. The SAT test often causes emotional distress upon the test-takers and is an overall disadvantage to all high school students.…
