Most Effective Form of Power
In Chapter 13, we have learned about Power. In section 3.1, there is a discussion regarding the 6 bases of power. Which type of power do you feel is most effective? Do you possess any of these powers? Please feel free to draw from outside of the business world if you would like.

There are six different types of power to include legitimate power, reward power, coercive power, expert power, information power, and referent power. Upon studying the lesson from Chapter 13, I believed the most effective type of power is referent power, “the ability to attract others, win their admiration, and hold them spellbound” (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). Unfortunately, I was studying the material as if each individual only holds one type of power. Throughout my research on this topic, I came across an article by Harold Fuqua, Jr., Kay Payne, and Joseph Cangemi who state, “an effective leader rarely depends on only one source or base of power” (n.d.). With this, I discovered the most effective type of power is actually a combination of expert, reward, and referent power.

Based on my personal experiences, I have come to the following conclusions regarding the three different types of power that are the most effective when combined.

Expert power is “power that comes from knowledge and skill” (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). Expert power is important because those who look up to you “will be dependent on your wisdom and knowledge to help them succeed” (Exforsys Inc., 2006). In addition, people must not only believe it but must see it so it is imperative for a leader to ensure their “actions speak louder than their words” (Exforsys Inc., 2006). I personally find this to be true. In the legal field, expert witnesses are used during courts to testify as to validity of certain evidence. Past experience working with the panel members (equivalent to civilian jury) shows they put more credibility into an expert witness who speaks in terms of science verse an expert

Power can be exercised in one of two ways. The first is far easier to comprehend. It is called “manifest power”. Manifest power involves one person or group of people exercising control over a second person or group of people by giving some sort of sign or signal. This includes everything from coercion to simply asking for something to be done or even giving non-verbal cues, like a police officer flashing their lights. If a police officer were to flash their lights, every driver in the United States would know that means the police officer wants them to pull over. By making the driver pull over, the police officer is exerting manifest power on the driver. As long as there is some form of observable communication between the two parties…

Referent power is the type of power that I use the most, because I usually gain power that is gained as a result of being admired by subordinates in the workplace. I like this type of power better in the workplace, because it is developed by trust from your employees. When I was a team leader I used this type of form of power it worked very well, because people felt a part of what was being done, that their opinions matter, and they showed respect to me as well. Referent power is hard to gain because you have to prove to other as a leader that you’re not just looking out for your interest you’re also looking out for theirs as well. Out of all the five different powers (Coercive, Legitimate, Reward, Referent, and Expert Power) mentioned. I have used all of them at one time. The one I have found most effective is Referent for me.…

To best understand leadership and power, it is helpful to understand the difference between the two terms, as they are not necessarily interchangeable—at least not from a trait-process point of view. For example, Peter Northouse (2010) listed such personal traits as height, intelligence, extraversion, and fluency as being characteristic of natural-born leaders (Leadership Theory and Practice/Fifth Edition). However, inherited power, such as that which is passed from one generational leader to the next, is largely non-contingent on a leader’s personal attributes; instead, focusing clearly on the retention of power itself. A prime, modern-day example would be Kim Jong-un assuming his father’s position in North Korea’s alleged democracy (generally providing a single candidate on voter ballots) in which citizens may vote against a candidate, but yet have but a single choice—which must be done publicly, and would result in the voter being identified and labeled as a traitor. Therefore, in some cases, power supersedes leadership. In other words, while all good leaders may have power, all who have power may not be good leaders.…

French revolutionist Maximilien Robespierre, struck fear into the hearts of many during the reign of terror, and the Estates system held power in different classes. the first and Second estates were the higher class, while the third estate was the “working poor”. As shown, there are many forms of power, yet are all based around the same idea, control.…

Power is define as the capacity of an individual to influence others, tempt others to persuade and encourage others to obtain specific administrative goals or to engage in specific behaviour (Cangemi, 1992). According to French and Raven’s (1960) there are five bases of power which can be divided into formal power and personal power (Robbins, 2011). The first formal power is coercive power, which is based upon punishment by these individual to power for failure to conform or achieve administration goals (French & Raven in Warren, 1969). Where else in reward power it is the ability to distribute rewards that viewed as valuable to others (French & Raven in Warren, 1969). As for legitimate power it occurs when an individual has status and are able to influence subordinates or super ordinals as people privately believe that the individual deserves such a position (Tiedens, 2001). According to Blau (1956) legitimate power are subordinates following the order of their leader as they respect their leader and the leader position (Blau in Tiedens, 2001). The next will be expert power which an individual have knowledge or specific skills that can influence others without rely heavily on surveillance as control (French & Raven in Warren, 1969). As for referent power, it’s defined as based on individual personal traits, behaviour, beliefs, perceptions and desirable resources (French & Raven in Warren, 1969). As for Weber (1954) defined power as the possibility of imposing one’s will upon the behaviour of others (Weber in Ritzer, 1996). According to Dahl (1957), suggested that power are the ability to get others to do something they would not otherwise to (Dahl, 1975). In Steven Lukes 3 – Dimensions of Power (1954), he ranged power as clearly visible (overt) and self-evident to an observer, through to power being elusive less visible (covert) and even on to institutionalized (Buchanan & Huczynski, 2010). In the central tension of an organization, when viewed…
