Maya Angelou In the 20th century, there was a famous African-American author being born. Her name was Marguerite Annie Johnson. Miss Marguerite was born to Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter. As Johnson was growing up, she had many difficult struggles and they each pushed her to great accomplishments. Marguerite was born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. Although she was born as Marguerite, her brother helped change her name to Maya, short for “mya sister”. She was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. Her brother’s name was Bailey Jr. Maya got married for the first time to Anastasios Angelopoulos in 1952 when she was 24. After graduating from Mission High School, she had her son Claude “Guy” Angelou. Then she divorced Anastasios and married Vusumzi Make. In 1960, she divorced him and married for the third time to Paul De Feu in 1973. Maya angelou moved many times in her early life. When she was married to Vusumzi, she moved to New York and joined the Harlem Writers Guild. When that marriage was coming to an end she and her son moved to Cario, Egypt and there she served as editor for The Arab Observer. Then she moved to Ghana to teach at the University of Ghana’s School of Music, and then back to America to help Malcolm X with African American Unity. Maya has many hobbies that include writing books and poems, singing, dancing, and acting. Angelou also has many awards and accomplishments. She has three Grammy Awards, a Chubb Fellowship Award, a Ladies Home Journal, Golden Eagle Award, and a North Carolina Award in Literature, Golden Plate Award, Candace Award, and a Horatio Alger Award. She also won a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School. She has been in many movies and plays and even has a few CD’s of her own.
