Lord of the Flies Essay Example
There are many symbols in William Golding’s Lord Of The Flies. Two of the most important symbols in the book are the conch shell and the sow’s head. Each symbol holds a different power over the boys, as well as an opposite power. The two symbols also have a different boy who introduced them to the story. Like the symbols, the two boys are both complete opposites.

I think that the conch shell represents order and civilization. Ralph is the boy who introduced the conch to the rest of the boys, and he too is a symbol inthe book. He represents the same thing as the conch. The power the conch holds over the boys is a power the forces them to stay civilized. The sow’s head is a symbol of savagery and destruction. The boy who introduced the idea of the sow’s head on a stick was Jack, and Jack too is a symbol in the book. Jack stands for savagery. You know right from the start of the novel the Jack is not like the other boys, and that he’s a savage because of what he tells Ralph that he wants him and his choir to be. When asked what he would like to do on the island he replies “Hunters” (Golding, page 19.) The powerthe sow’s head holds over the boys is more of fear than a power. The sow’s head is a constant reminder that they are living like savages. I think it also reminds the boys that if they can kill a pig then they would probably kill one of the others.

To Simon the sow’s head holds a completely different power over him. To Simon the sow’s head represents craziness. Simon is different than the other boys, so that might by why the sow’s head is different for him. When the other boys are fighting, Simon goes to his private glade in the forest. The thing that gave me the idea that the sow’s head represents something different to Simon is because Simon has a conversation with it. Also because the conversation sounds like something that would’ve came out of Simon’s head, because Simon never really believed in a beast on the island and the sow’s head or The

    First off, the conch becomes a symbol of authority as well as law and order when Ralph and Piggy find it shortly after crash landing on the island. “Where’s the man with the trumpet?” (20) supports my theory of the conch being a symbol of authority.     Throughout literature, certain things are considered to mean something beyond themselves; these symbols make themselves ever present in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. While some symbols appear in an obvious fashion (the glasses, the pig’s head) others like to hide from the reader (the fire, the conch shell). From Piggy’s introduction into the novel, they symbolize of his glasses seemed apparent. The glasses symbolize a voice of reason and logic within the boys, and once Jack took Piggy’s glasses from him and started the fire all the logic dissipated. The shell symbolizes an organized civilization within the boys. As they search for someone a leader, they notice Ralph – one of the oldest in the bunch – holding the conch shell.     Golding uses the conch the boys find in the beginning of the story as a symbol for order. When Ralph wakes up, he finds a boy named Piggy. Then, they both find a shell called a conch. Piggy tells Ralph how to blow into it. '"We can use this to call the others. They'll come when they hear us-"' (16). Ralph spat into the conch and called the first meeting the boys have ever had. They made a rule that only the person who is holding the conch can talk. The conch became one of the most important things on the island. "Hands where reaching for the conch in the light of the setting sun" (81). The boys where very civil at the time and even though they would not get in trouble if they disobeyed, they felt as if it was necessary.     The conch brought hope of rescue, hope of something better. Unfortunately for Jack, he lost all hope of getting off the island pretty fast. But for some like Piggy, the hope that the cream colored conch brought was priceless. For Piggy the conch would be the one and only thing that would not be taken away from him. That simple little conch shell symbolizes a little bit of beauty in a seemingly ugly place. Piggy more than the rest saw that beauty and never lost hope. In the beginning that conch gave all the boys hope. they revered it cause it was gleamed with the possible chance of rescue.
