TITLE:

Medical Emergency in General Dental Practice.

LOCATION:

Yorkshire and the Humber Postgraduate Deanery,
Willow Terrace Road,
University of Leeds,
Leeds.
LS2 9JT

GROUP:
The presentation is to a group of 12 Longitudinal Foundation Dental
Trainees.
The group have been emailed individually several weeks before and asked to prepare and present a short power-point presentation. They will then present to the other members of the group. Each Trainee will present one medical emergency scenario considering a diagnosis and a practical way of managing the medical emergency. They will be provided with a medical emergency drug kit and Automated External Defibrillator
(AED). All presentations will be emailed to each member of the group as a resource.
OBJECTIVES:
 Provide a reflective overview of medical emergencies in General
Dental Practice.
 Engage learners to participate with open discussions.
 Discuss the types, location and likelihood of encountering a medical emergency in General Dental Practice.

 Identify and discuss methods of preventing a medical emergency in General Dental Practice including risk assessments.
 The Learners to present and discuss the diagnosis and practical management of a medical emergency in General Dental Practice.
 Highlight the importance of medical emergency training and the
GDC training requirements.
MATERIALS / MEDIA:

Power-point presentation on USB drive
Paper and pens for Learners and quiz
Box of chocolates for winners of quiz
Medical emergency drug kit
AED
Feedback / Evaluation Forms
Camera for Photographs of Group / Myself

PROCEDURES:
Introduce myself to the group.
Introduce a brief overview of the presentation and encourage an open discussion of the topic.
Assess the group’s knowledge of the incidence of medical emergencies at different locations within the dental practice by show of hands.
Assess the group’s knowledge of the frequency and type of medical emergencies through discussion.
Divide the group into pairs for a 15 question quiz on medical emergencies. To encourage participation and assess learning needs.

Discuss the answers of the quiz by group discussion and provide the winning pair a prize.
Present a short comedy video of a patient ringing the dental practice with a dental emergency.
Ask the group of ways of preventing a medical emergency to include a comprehensive medical history. Assess procedures currently in place at each practice in relation to medical histories.
Highlight procedures which I currently use in my practice in relation to prevention. Have an open discussion of the group’s experience of medical emergencies which they have encountered in General Dental Practice
Discuss with the group of my experience of medical emergencies in
General Dental Practice over the previous 18 years.
Discuss ways of managing fringe medical emergency situations.
Open the medical emergency drug kit. Pass around components of the drug kit to members of the group. Open the AED.
Inform members of the group of the role play presentations after a coffee break. Each individual medical emergency presentation will need to include a brief overview, diagnosis and practical management including use of the emergency drug kit and AED.
COFFEE BREAK
Role plays – 5 minutes per presentation per group member. Encourage open question and answer discussions after each presentation.
Encourage and ask any group members yet to forward the presentation to email the information as soon as possible.

Discuss medical emergency training requirements and a brief overview of the general management of a medical emergency.
Provide a synopsis of the presentation.
End the presentation with a short comedy video of Yorkshire Airlines!
Answer any questions. Take photographs for PG Healthcare Education
Course.
Provide each group member with a feedback / evaluation form to complete. Forward all presentations to members of the group as a resource.
EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES:
 Each Trainee to have a clear understanding of the types of medical emergencies they are likely to encounter in General
Dental Practice.
 Each group member to have gained confidence in the diagnosis and management of a medical emergency.
 Each Trainee to understand the importance of a comprehensive medical history and patient risk assessment in the prevention of a medical emergency.
 Each member of the group to know the location and contents of the medical emergency drug kit and AED in their own practice.
 Each Trainee to understand the need for both personal and practice medical training and GDC requirements.
 Each Trainee to gain experience in presenting to a group.
