(TCOs A& B) What is organizational learning? Why is it important for firms to emphasize organizational learning? (Points: 10) Organizational learning is an organization-wide ongoing process that improves its collective ability to accept, make sense of, and respond to external and internal change. It requires the collective interpretation and systematic integration of new knowledge that leads to risk taking such as experimentation and to collective action. It is important for firms to emphasize the importance of organizational learning because knowledge is now the most important resource of a company as knowledge can be a source of differentiation and competitive edge for the company. With having an organization that constantly learns, the company will be able to foster the development of innovative ideas, products, and processes that can result in more efficient company operations, better products and services, and increased revenues. Moreover, a learning organization is better able to cope with employee turnovers as knowledge is properly and efficiently stored and managed within the company, making it easy for an employee to learn tasks and gain the needed knowledge.

(TCOs E & F) Please identify and give examples of four of the five indirect conflict management strategies. (Points: 10) Four of the five indirect conflict management strategies include reduced interdependence, appeals to common goals, hierarchical referral, and alterations in the use of mythology and scripts. Reduced interdependence involves making adjustments in the level of interdependency when workflow conflict exists. For example, if two members of a project are having a conflict then one of them may be moved to another project Appeals to common goals involves asking the conflicting parties to focus their attention on a mutually desirable goal. This helps the conflicting parties recognize their mutual interdependence. As an example, if two project members are conflicting about how to perform a certain task the manager should ask them to focus on the completion of the project regardless of the manner by which they choose to complete the task. Hierarchical referral, on the other hand, refers to the use of the chain of command the resolution of the conflict. For example, if the project manager is unable to resolve a conflict between two project team members then he or she may want to escalate the issue to the department manager for resolution. Finally, the alterations of the use of mythology and scripts. For example, if the conventional script around the company is for everyone to agree with what the managers say, this can be altered to show that the employees’ opinions are also important and that they should be heard. In turn, this can encourage the conflicting parties to start a dialog in order to resolve the conflict.
