Jose’s first tutor was his mother. After, his parents employed 3 private tutors, one after another, at his early age to teach him at home. They were Maestro Celestino, Maestro Lucas Padua and Leon Monroy, in order. The last mentioned was his father’s former classmate who taught him Spanish and Latin. Not long, Monroy died; Jose’s parents then enrolled him to a private school in Biñan. Near Jose’s school lived Juancho, an old painter who happened to be his school teacher’s father-in-law. Jose, attracted by his love with arts, spent his vacant hours at Juancho’s painter’s studio for the latter’s free lessons in drawing and painting. By 1872, Jose’s first year in Ateneo, he took private lessons (to enhance his Spanish) and paid three pesos for those. It was during recesses at noon in Santa Isabel College. Also, in his stay in Ateneo, he had spent his leisure hours with Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez to help him iprove his literary talent; on his last years in the said school, he studied painting and sculpture under Agustin Saez (a Spanish painter) and Romualdo de Jesus (a Filipino sculptor), respectively. Under a private instructor, Rizal took lessons in French, German, and English, while he was enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters on November 3, 1882. While Jose Rizal was at Madrid again, a meeting was held which proceeded to the business of electing the Responsible. The election was done during February, 1891 at its first week. It was between Rizal and Marcelo H. del Pilar. It was agreed that the one who’ll take the position must obtain two-thirds of the votes. On the first day of balloting, Rizal was winning but he couldn’t get 2/3 votes. The same thing happened on the second day. During day 3, Mariano Ponce asked the Filipinos to vote Rizal; hence, Rizal won. Yet, Rizal declined the position. July 3, 1892 (Sunday) in the evening, Rizal attended a meeting at Doroteo Ongjunco’s (a Chinese-Filipino Mestizo) house, on Ylaya Street, Tondo, Manila. It was when the La Liga Filipina was found. While he was exiled in Dapitan, Rizal volunteered to be a military doctor, as advised by Blumentritt, in Cuba, which was in a revolution and a raging yellow fever epidemic.
