Is Hookah Smoking Safer Than Smoking Cigarettes Essay Example
Is hookah smoking safer than smoking cigarettes?
Hookah smoking is not safer than cigarette smoking. Also known as narghile, shisha and goza, a hookah is a water pipe with a smoke chamber, a bowl, a pipe and a hose. Specially made tobacco is heated, and the smoke passes through water and is then drawn through a rubber hose to a mouthpiece. The tobacco is no less toxic in a hookah pipe, and the water in the hookah does not filter out the toxic ingredients in the tobacco smoke. Hookah smokers may actually inhale more tobacco smoke than cigarette smokers do because of the large volume of smoke they inhale in one smoking session, which can last as long as 60 minutes.

Smokers have a harder time healing from surgeries, and have more overall health issues than nonsmokers. This results in more time away from work, and more doctor and hospital visits. Smoking compromises a person's health in so many ways.

1 session of hookah = smoking 20 cigarettes

How do they make tobacco.
Hookah tobacco is often flavored with molasses, fruit pulp or honey and has had additional flavor added, such as coconut, fruit flavors, mint or coffee. Flavorings sweeten the taste and aroma of hookah tobacco, making it more appealing to young people, especially.

While research about hookah smoking is still emerging, evidence shows that it poses many dangers:

* Hookah smoke contains high levels of toxic compounds, including tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). In fact, hookah smokers are exposed to more carbon monoxide and smoke than are cigarette smokers. * As with cigarette smoking, hookah smoking is linked to lung and oral cancers, heart disease and other serious illnesses. * Hookah smoking delivers about the same amount of nicotine as cigarette smoking does, possibly leading to tobacco dependence. * Hookah smoke poses dangers associated with secondhand smoke. * Hookah smoking by pregnant women can result in low birth

First of all, smoking affects a smoker physically and mentally. Nicotine in cigarettes or cigars is a highly addictive substance. The tar and carbon monoxide in cigarettes increase a smoker’s risk of heart diseases, brain tumors and lung cancers. According to North East Valley Division General Practice, a risk of a stroke is 25 percent likely to occur in male smokers. The nicotine increases cholesterol levels in smokers’ bodies. Men who smoke are also ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Smoking is harmful to the respiratory and circulatory systems. It causes high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and diabetes. A person’s appearance is changed when smoking. A smoker’s skin, nails and teeth are stained and his breath is stink like smoke. For female smokers, their cervix, and uterus are vulnerable to cancer. They might also develop fertility difficulties. For pregnant female smokers, it incurs premature birth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A lack of education as well as the how new hookah smoking is to the American society has made it seem safer than smoking tobacco. Although the waterpipe smoking does deal with water and tasty flavors these aspects do not mask the real threats that it poses to your oral health. Many youngsters believe that hookah is not a threat to their health (15). Although a two hour session is equivalent to smoking about ten cigarettes (16) and again waterpipe smoking still has nicotine in it. This link between cigarettes and hookah, make waterpipe smoking risky to try since the two forms of smoking can lead to oral cancer amongst other complications. A clue as to how hookah smoking can cause cancer is in a study of Middle Easterners. In some Middle Eastern cultures, hookah smoking has been a part of their society for years (19). Unfortunately some of the highest instances of oropharyngeal cancer have been discovered to be in the Middle East. When the aspects of some of the cultures in the Middle East were discovered and reviewed the researchers saw that hookah smoking was popular custom (19). This allows them to draw the conclusions that hookah smoking could possibly have strong links to oral cavity cancer. These results also help to confirm in general that oral cavity cancer can be tied to oral cavity cancer. In tobacco smoking, cigar smoking, and hookah smoking nicotine content is a reoccurring factor but it is not the only causative agent in oral cavity cancer related to smoking. This brings up the question does nicotine have to be present in smoking to be related to an oral cancer diagnosis? And what does this mean for marijuana…

Another vice that is commonly used to feed nicotine addiction is chewing tobacco. Although there is a large difference in chewing tobacco and smoking tobacco, they perform the same process. Chewing tobacco’s nicotine content enters the human system through the mouth tissues that it comes in contact with. This type of tobacco contains materials that cause abrasions on the skin and gums in the mouth creating a direct connection between the chemicals and blood stream.
