INVENTOR
Case Study: Inventory
Drake Radio got its start during World War I by manufacturing radio communications equipment for the military. By the start of World War II, Drake was one of the largest suppliers of military communications equipment. Using its technology and experience gained from manufacturing military communications equipment, Drake became known as one of the best producers of amateur radio equipment. Drake especially excelled with its single sideband radios and its two-meter radios for amateur use. Although these radios were expensive, they were of the finest quality and always in demand. In developing their DR-2000 CB radios, however, Drake decided to mass produce cheap units that would have a wide appeal and a low price. The demand for the DR-2000 was fairly constant from month to month, with demands of 801, 807, 795, and 797 units in January, February, March, and April, respectively (approximately 800 per month for all 12 months of the year).
All of the components, except the FM tuner, were manufactured by Drake and stored until they were needed. Annual carrying cost was estimated to be 25 percent for all modules. The FM tuner modules were supplied by Collins Electronics, which also adjusted and sealed them. The cost to place an order was estimated at $50 per order, and the time to receive an order from Collins was approximately two weeks. Collins also offered quantity discounts on its FM tuners, as shown in Table 1.

Nitobitso Electronics also manufactured FM tuners that are compatible for the DR-2000. Because of its location in Japan, the time to receive an order was about two months, and the ordering cost was $100 because of the additional required paperwork. The quantity discounts offered by Nitobitso is shown in Table 2.

1) What is the optimal order quantity if ordering tuners from Collins?
2) What is the optimal order quantity if ordering tuners from Nitobitso?
3) Based on the cost figures, who would you recommend that Drake get their

From his first business venture through his multi-billion dollar deals, Bill Gates has always been a ferocious and keen businessman. Bill Gates first started tinkering with computers when his high school, Lakeside Prep, wanted to acquaint its students with computers. In 1968 the school held a fund raiser to buy computer time on a DEC PDP-10 computer that was owned by General Electric. Lakeside was able to raise enough money for what they thought would be ample time to last throughout the entire year. Bill Gates, along with Paul Allen and a handful of friends, used all of the purchased computer time within a few weeks. Most of them were spending all day and night in the computer lab; some even began to skip class and failed to turn in homework because of the allure of the computer. After they were out of computer time the school had a lucky break as one of the student’s father worked for a company called Computer Center Corporation, a company that offered affordable computing time. A deal between the school and CCC gave Gates much more computer time than the original deal had. Immediately Gates and friends began pushing the boundaries of the machine they were given. They crashed the system several times, which also led to the security system on the computer breaking. However, they did not get into trouble until it was discovered that they had edited the files that tracked the amount of computer time they used. It was this exploit that got the group banned from the computer lab, but later was the reason that CCC hired the programmers.…

Introduction Although the use of electricity dates back to Benjamin Franklin’s days, it was not practical for use in the home until one person changed the way science thinks about it- Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla’s childhood, greatest inventions, and position as the electrician for the World’s Fair all shaped how he revolutionized the use of electricity and brought it to everyone in America. Childhood and Personal Life Born in a farm house on July 9, 1856 in Smijlan, Croatia to happy parents Djouka and Mijulin, Nikola Tesla was the fourth child. Nikola Tesla proved to be inventive, just like his mother. Although Nikola’s mother had little formal education, she was extraordinarily intelligent. She invented several tools to make household life easy, including things like egg beaters, looms, and butter churns. Tesla’s father was a priest. Young Tesla was extremely motivated by pride. Fights with friends or envy of their possessions lead him to inventing new better things. One time, he got in an argument with his friends and they excluded him from their fishing trip. In a fury, Tesla made his own fishing hook and went out to capture some fish himself. Because he did not own fishing bait, he decided to make the hook shiny so that the frogs would be interested. His idea worked, and he ended up coming home with about two dozen frogs when his friends came home with nothing. (Aldrich 13) Because Nikola Tesla’s hobbies seemed strange to his peers, Nikola Tesla did not have many friends and often isolated himself from others his age. This caused him to spend even more time on his inventions. One of his best childhood inventions was an insect powered propeller. It…

Albert Einstein, who many people regard him as the greatest physicist of the 20th century, was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. Was a German origin and Jewish, but he felt neither German, due to the militarized culture, nor fanatical Jew, because of their refusal to believe in God 's image as described in the texts of the Old Testament. In 1880 his family moved to Munich where his father, Hermann Einstein and his uncle Jacob Einstein opened a small electromechanical workshop. In Munich Albert spent his childhood and there he learned the first letters in a very strict school. The military discipline of the German culture in the 19th century did not seem suited to his liberal nature, for that reason Einstein doesn’t showed no particular performance in school. Along with other studies and the bossy insistence of his mother, Einstein studied music and although he played only for rest was an accomplished violinist. (8)…

The wheel was invented in prehistoric times and probably its discovery was repeated many times independently. The oldest example of a wheel yet found is from the region of Mesopotamia (Iraq), so it may have been invented around the area where Iraq is today. The wheel may have been inspired by a simple observation of a rolling tree trunk. When a number of tree trunks are placed on the ground close together, and a weight is placed upon them, the object can be moved much more easily. The rolling trunks cause less friction than dragging the object on the ground.…
