1. Define the term ‘culture’
The definition of the word culture is;
The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
2. How would a sociologist define ‘culture’ compared to the way a psychologist would define the concept?
A sociologist defines culture; Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviours, objects, and other characteristics common to the members of a particular group or society.
A psychologist defines it; Culture is the set of ideas, behaviours, attitudes, and traditions that exist within large groups of people.
So basically the same.
3. What are ‘norms’ and why are they important?
The norm is the type of behaviour or way of doing something that is accepted by the society you are in.
4. What does it mean to have a normative view of society?
Normative means relating to an ideal standard or model, so a standard view of society, expecting the norm in society.
5. How do norms vary between cultures?
It is same thing like asking why people differ in linguistic exercise. Norms are a set of certain practices and ritual a given community or a select region follows and they have been accustomed to that since their birth. Regions, nations, community, cast are different and so are their norms. In some countries being kissed as a greeting is acceptable and encouraged in others it would be unacceptable and even illegal.
6. What does it mean when something is symbolic?
It means that object or ritual or whatever represents something and is the symbol for that. For instance the Eiffel tower would be symbolic to Paris.
7. What are the symbolic elements of culture?
Some cultures adopt a symbol and use it to represent them, such as a swastika or a flag.
8. What is the importance of language in transmitting culture?
Language is how we communicate ideas and without ideas and traditions culture could not exist.
