“I’ve never read a book in my life”, “Reading takes too much time”, “Why read when you can watch?” These are the types of phrases and questions our current generation frequently seem to say and ask when any type of literature comes to mind. Literature has unfortunately become a “dying fad” of modern day and this evolution has affected dominantly adolescents with how they interact with others. With texting, writing and speaking, teenagers and even adults have grown the habit to communicate in those ways illiterately. Also, reading novels and such make people more open to different situations. If I Had My Life To Live Over by Erma Bombeck exemplifies this where she lists things should would have done before finding out she had a fatal disease. Furthermore, people should read literature because it enables one to express themselves with the words on a page, or screen and apply it to their lives. Lord, Lord, Why Did You Make Me Black by RuNett Nia Ebo exemplifies not only black people who are insecure of their color, but can be applicable to every other race.

Literature is so crucial for the preparedness of a job, business, or any profession, because that is what gets one to be successful and intellectual. By constantly reading novels, newspapers and any of the sorts, it helps expand one’s vocabulary with the exposure of words unheard of. Because of this, one would apply these words, if exercised, to their every day vocabulary and not become so repetitive with what they write, or say. With the routine of reading literature, this unhealthy habit would be broken that would also be beneficial for careers and such that are need for professionalism. Without the practice of reading literature, one will sound illiterate and that makes their first impression depreciate which can harm one’s future.
