EXCECUTIVE SUMMARY
Addu Atoll is the main economic and administrative centre in the south of the country, and the only place to rival Male’ in size and importance. Its 28, 000 people spread out over seven inhabited islands is a huge number in the Maldives. Apart from the five inhabited islands, there are many uninhabited islands in Addu including Gan , where an international airport is located.
This report is based on different ways to develop Addu City as a tourist destination within two years’ time.

TOURISM
From a very humble beginning in the 1970s the tourism in the Maldives has evolved and matured into an industry, which is a key player of the domestic economy. Tourism in the Maldives began in 1972 with 2 tourist resorts namely Kurumba Village and Bandos Island Resort with a bed capacity of 280. Today, there are more than 105 tourist resorts in Maldives and over 900000 tourists visit Maldives every year.
Today tourism contributes over 30% to the country 's GDP, generating more than 60% of foreign exchange earnings and more than 90% of government tax revenues.

Definitely one of the best places for in¬dependent travelers to come, heart-shaped Addu Atoll is the most southern extreme of the country and has a very different feel to it for a number of reasons.
