All over the world, parents decide to divorce and this leaves children hurt and confused. Because of their innocence and immaturity, children are unable to process stressful events as adults are. Their reactions and behavior can range from delicate to quick-tempered. The children may lose contact with one parent or they might decide to makes some bad decisions in their life due to the feelings of neglect. Some of the bad choices could be violence and struggling in academics. There are impacts on teens that could be short term but there are also long term effects too, because children look up to their parents as role models. Family clearly impacts teenagers, especially a divorce. Faber and Wittenborn (2010) report that on average, children in divorced families and stepfamilies, as compared to those in non-divorced families, are more likely to exhibit behavioral and emotional problems, lower social competence and self-esteem, less socially responsible behavior, and…
Since the 1960’s divorce rate began to increase dramatically but the biggest rise in divorce rate was in 1972 when it doubled and was 120,000. The divorce rate continued to rise and in 1993 reached its peak at 180,000. There has been explanations for the rise in divorce which are: secularisation, changes in law, divorce had become cheaper and also changing attitudes in society especially with women as they had begun to receive more rights. By the times divorce had become a lot more socially acceptable.…
Divorce is very hard on everyone in the family. It is stressful for the parents but also for the children. Aside from a death in the family, divorce is one of the most stressful events for a family. Children under the age of five may have more frequent temper tantrums, trouble sleeping, and they may feel more separation anxiety. School aged children may experience sadness, guilt, and anger, they may also become disinterested in school and can develop phobias. Teens are likely to develop insecurities, feel sadness, and other emotions; they are also likely to use and abuse drugs and alcohol, engage in risky behaviors such as criminal activity, skipping school etc.…

I chose this topic because of the high percentage of divorce that occurs every year in the United States. Therefore, the failure to protect our little children is a social crisis lead to a tremendous impact on the society in which the behavioral problems that are caused by insufficient nurturing style increase the level of future involvement in social crimes. Also, the children of a single parent are more likely to suffer the poverty and education related difficulties. The Alexander house association (2013) stated that there are 2.3 million marriages a year, with over 1.2 million divorces. Statistically, 40% of first marriages, 60% of second, and 73% of third marriages end in divorce. According the new studies, children whose parents separate in their early age are more likely to have behavioral problems such as lying or stealing, hurting himself or other , destroying and so on. A longitudinal study was designed by Li 2007 to measure the effects of divorce on the children’s behavioral development. The study found that parental divorce is associated with a higher level of…
The separation of spousal couples, commonly called divorce, has created its own world of problems within society. When a couple with children separates, it often results in court cases and the children feeling the pressure of choosing a parent to side with. Often times, the children will become angry with one or both parents which can result in loss of contact once the child is an adult and is an event that can cause marriages of the effected children to fail. For example, up to 22% of women have been divorced and 21% of men (“Actual Divorce Rate and Risk”). Though the percentages may seem low, the…

Watching parents take a home from a traditional family lifestyle to a "broken" home by getting a divorce is very devastating to a child's mental well-being. As Judith Seltzer notes, "Recent reviews summarize evidence that children are emotionally distressed by parents' separation. Young children, especially, are depressed and anxious, and they feel torn by loyalties to both parents" (283). While some researchers believe "[p]arental divorce is associated with substantial short-term elevations in children's emotional distress , [t]here is a great deal of evidence that for some youths divorce remains problematic throughout adolescence" (Aseltine 133).…
One of two marriages ends in divorce. This fact impacts the loves of many children because the effect of divorce is not limited to the adults. Divorce deeply effects everyone involved especially the children. Research provides evidence of the negative impact on children and how it effects the differently according to the age. It is important that the adults involved be aware of the consequences their divorce will have on the life of their children and take responsibility of setting guidelines for themselves to help their child through this difficult time. Based on careful studies, it is shown that children of divorced parents can function and love normal lives. With a good support system and parents who are willing to move past divorce, children can learn to cope with divorce and move on themselves.…

Children involved in a divorce are deeply affected and the lasting effects will virtually extend out to every aspect of the child's life. The statistics being provided show the many ways that this is true. Children of divorce are more likely to show signs of struggle with academic achievement have more emotional problems, are involved more frequently in drug abuse and crime, and many others. Conduct problems are common in children coming from broken homes. A study suggested that this could be due to the fact that divorce has a negative effect on the parenting a child receives (Shansky, 2002). A father becomes less involved for example. Also, a mother must adjust along with the children and often experiences depressive tendencies as a result. These type behaviors inhibit the ability of a child to receive the parenting that they deserve.…
