Rapid City is a safe place to live under the topic of air quality. In the perimeters of the Main Street Square, many precautions are taken to ensure good air quality. Many signs are posted near the Main Street Square fountain area stating “no smoking.” In addition, smoke stacks are located near the parking ramp, where there is not a heavy flow of pedestrian traffic. Rapid City is situated at the bottom of the Black Hills in a valley; this location does allow smoke to accumulate if there is a wild fire. Often times, wild fires from areas such as, Washington, Oregon, and Montana will send smoke above the Black Hills depending on the direction of the wind. This problem is short-term and goes away when the wind changes direction. Another potential…

In the book How the Other Half Lives, there are many parts and quotes that can be used to support Horace’s statement. For example, Jacob Riis wrote, “He goes to describe the plight of the city’s poor children, many of them homeless, having been cast out by families no longer able to support them. He writes of the disastrous effects of alcohol, alludes circumspectly to the opportunity and danger that prostitution presents to poor girls, deplores mendicants and other dependent on charity” (Riis…

In the poem Sympathy for the devil, the speaker uses many different historical allusions and understatements to gain the readers sympathy for him. The speaker of the poem is the Devil and he tries to make it sound as though he is forced to be around all of the death and despair so that the reader might feel bad for him. He uses the historical allusion of “I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain” to show that he has been around for a very long time and he has seen some of the most sorrowful deaths in history. The speaker tries to make the reader feel sorry for him because he has seen so much death. Throughout the poem he makes it very clear that he himself did not murder or cause any of the deaths that he talks about by making the understatements “I was round when” and “I watched “. Those kind of understatements show that he was not the reason for the deaths even though he was there when they occurred and therefore he should not be to blame but in fact he wants remorse. The biggest understatement that the speaker use is the second to last stanza when he list the contradictions “Just as every cop is a criminal, And all the sinners saints, As heads is Tails”. In that stanza he tries to show that people should not be judged for what they see or are around because no one is perfect. The best way that he attempted to elicit sympathy for himself is by being polite by saying “Please allow” and “Let me please”. Him being polite was probably his best chance to gain any kind of sympathy from the reader because usually if you are nice to a person they are generally nice to…

Because the poem is long, it won’t be quoted extensively here, but it is attached at the end of the paper for ease of reference. Instead, the paper will analyze the poetic elements in the work, stanza by stanza. First, because the poem is being read on-line, it’s not possible to say for certain that each stanza is a particular number of lines long. Each of several versions looks different on the screen; that is, there is no pattern to the number of lines in each stanza. However, the stanzas are more like paragraphs in a letter than they are poetic constructions. This is the first stanza, which is quoted in full to give a sense of the entire poem:…

Burke’s idea of a social contract between generations is often cited in contemporary debates about the spiraling nation debt of the United States. What do young and old citizens living today owe, as a matter of commutative justice, to generations of citizens who are not yet born? Is it just for today’s citizens to demand policies (e.g., low taxes and high levels of government service) that create huge debts for future generations to pay?…

This poem is essentially the speaker’s parting words to his love. We see that he is very conflicted about his life. Even as he looks death in the eyes he's unsure as to what comes next. He is weary of his life. He feels dead inside or perhaps he was born as a stillborn whose body had survived, adapting to the harsh world but his spirit still stuck inside the womb. He feels resentful that death has not come quickly, it was as if some force was pulling strings to keep his alive. So it's easier just to take thing into his own hand. He’s wondering if people will disdain and curse him before they mourn him. He feels calm at the end of his note, if it's in his head or head he was not sure. At the end he wholeheartedly believes that the grim reaper…

Both authors assert that the collective self-represented by the past is part and parcel of that embodied by the future- bound to it and inseparable. The one serves to define the other. Smoking is a very dirty habit. First cigarettes have waste in the form of paper and filters, called butts, that are left behind to lay around and litter, the streets, sidewalks, and landfills. Remorse is the moral anguish, the sorrow and shame, and the regret and guilt, which may haunt even the fiercest, mightiest king. It is often accompanied with the consequences of the individual’s wrongdoing. Remorse takes a principal part in some of Greek’s classic tragedies. One could say, the tragic hero is likely to experience such feelings, likewise in the Greek tragedies Oedipus Rex, rewritten by John Bennett and Moira Kerr, as well as Antigone written by Sophocles, two characters Oedipus and Creon both display signs of remorse. Yet ultimately, it is evident through the emotions displayed, admittance of their sins, and further self imposed retribution, that Oedipus suggests a higher degree of remorse.…
