El Salvador’s Civil war: 1979-1992

* A town called el Mozote near the border of El Salvador and Honduras * The massacre was caused by the government of El Salvador * During the civil war, the rebels were known as the guerillas * Supported the left-wing

* Guerilla- a member of an irregular usually military or paramilitary unit operating in small bands in occupied territory to harass and undermine the enemy, as by surprise raids. * The massacre was caused by a special force task that was trained in the US * The men rounded everyone in the village and questioned them about the guerillas. The villagers were suspected to be part of the rebel group. * The men, women and children were separated into different groups and kept in different areas. * The Atlacatl Battalion, a “Rapid Deployment Infantry Battalion” a unit that is trained for “counterinsurgency” warfare. They were trained by the supervision of United States military advisers in 1981 * arrived in El Mozote to enforce a military request known as “Operacion Rescate” * In the early 1980’s a revolution broke out in a small country in Central America, El Salvador. The rebels who were known as the Guerillas to the common people, or the FMLN. The cause of the war were for many reasons mostly for the political unfairness in the country, major separation in social class and the huge amount of poverty in country. The people which were mostly the poor and less fortunate rose up and created a group known as the FMLN, a guerrilla group which were the rebels that started the civil war in El Salvador. Before the civil war started there were many deaths and the one that kicked off the revolution was the death of the Archbishop Oscar Romero along with the deaths of some women and children.
