Chapter 1

Themes of Textbook

The Earth is a unique, evolving system. Within the Earth System, chemical elements pass in cycles between different types of rock and sea, rock, and air.

Plate Tectonics explains many Earth processes. Earth has a core, mantle, and crust.

Measurements:
1 Ka=1 thousand years ago
1 Ma=One million years ago
1 Ga=One billion years ago

The Earth is 4.57 billion years old.

Big Bang
All matter and energy was initially packed into a small point
The point exploded and hydrogen atoms began to form
Big bang nucleosynthesis occurred

As the Universe continued to expand and cool further, atoms and molecules slowed down and accumulated into patchy clouds called nebulae

Eventually Gravity began to remold the Universe and stars began to form.

According to the Nebula theory, the Sun and all other objects in the Solar system was formed from material swirling around in the nebula

Forming the Earth-Moon System
1. A nebula forms from hydrogen and helium
2. Gravity pulls gas and dust inward to form an accretion disk
3. Dust begins hot enough for fusion to occur
4. Dust and ice particles collide and stick together forming planetesimals
5. Gravity reshaped protoearth into a sphere
6. A small planet collides with the Earth, the debris form a ring
7. The moon forms from the ring of debris
8. The atmosphere develops from volcanic gases
9. Rain becomes abundant

The heavier elements were formed from stellar nucleosynthesis during the life cycles of existing stars.

The first Nebulae consisted of Hydrogen and Helium(light elements)

Earth and all other planets of our solar system orbit the sun; the entire universe is not Sun-centered.

When a light source moves toward you, it becomes blue as it shifts to a higher frequency; receding light shifts to red, a lower frequency.

Our solar system lies near the outer edge of the Milky Way; it formed less than 5 billion years ago;

    A nebula, an immense cloud of hydrogen gas and dust, condenses into smaller regions of matter. On occasion, one of these regions collapses under the force of its own gravitational attraction, often triggered by an outside force, like a nearby supernova-an explosion of a star. After the collapse of a cloud, atoms begin gravitating together to form a condensed center. The condensed center is a protostar. As gravity pulls in more gas and dust, pressure builds, causing the protostar core to heat up. Clouds and matter begin to rotate around the protostar and flatten due to their rotation. They surround the protostar like a rotating disk. The protostar continues to grow and its core continues to heat. When the core is hot enough, nuclear fusion begins. The start of nuclear fusion is technically the beginning of a star's life. Eventually, when the nuclear energy runs out, the star dies. Depending on the size and mass of the star, it can go through many stages and die in different ways-one of those ways being a supernova.…

    According to the nebular hypothesis, these clouds collapsed from some kind of turbulence that caused it to heat up and eventually turn into a star. My understanding of the origin and evolution of the solar system is still very limited. Development is made by pushing through the scientific process of hypothesis, prediction, measurement, theory, and hypothesis. However, there is still a lot of guesswork to be tested before we can really talk about a real theory of solar system formation. Researchers believe that the solar system was formed when the blast of a nearby star called a supernova disturbed a cloud of gas and dirt in space. This burst made waves in space that held the cloud of gas and dust. Crushing made the cloud start to fall, as gravity dragged the gas and dirt together, creating a solar nebula. Eventually, the cloud grew warmer and heavier in the middle, with a circle of gas and dirt surrounding it that was hot in the middle but cool at the edges. As the circle got thinner and thinner, molecules began to attach together and form clumps. Some clumps got bigger, as molecules and small clumps stuck to them, eventually developing planets or moons. Near the midpoint of the cloud, where planets like Earth formed, only stony material could stand the great heat. Frozen matter settle down in the outer areas of the circle along with rocky material, As the cloud continued to fall in, the center eventually got so hot that it became a star, the Sun, and blew most of the gas and dust of the new solar system with a strong solar wind. Researchers have found that the solar system is about 4600 million years old! According to the witness explanation in Genesis, God created the earth on Day 1, and the sun and moon on the Fourth Day, most likely along with the planets.
