Fried Green Tomatoes Fried Green Tomatoes has always been portrayed as a “woman’s” novel, but it really a story about true friendship. The plot encompasses many issues that face the people of the 1920’s and 1930’s including the issue of racism, before the time of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. It includes death, abuse, murder, and even menopause. However, the main plot tells the story of two women, Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison, and the trials and tribulations of their life. Idgie and Ruth are business partners, best friends, and if you have read the book then in the eyes of many, lesbians. We do not meet Idgie until she is nearing the end of her early childhood and reaching the stage known as the middle childhood. Idgie is different, a tomboy to the extreme and her family wholeheartedly accepts it. The most accepting is her brother, Buddy, her very first best friend. Idgie experiences a terrible heartbreak during her young developmental stage. She, along with Ruth witness Buddy’s tragic death. This will forever change Idgie, as she becomes even more rebellious and revolutionary. A example of her mischievous ways was when she can road past the church during a sermon and compared the preacher to a snake. The next stage that greatly influences Idgie’s life is when Ruth is asked to come and stay at Idgie’s home by her mother. Idgie is cautious and reluctant to Ruth in the beginning. Idgie blames her for Buddy’s death and tragedy was all she saw when she saw Ruth. Idgie taunts Ruth’s proper ways by incessantly challenging her to a battle of the wills. The moment of truth comes when Idgie dares Ruth to jump off a moving train. This was a test and Ruth passed with flying colors. Idgie had met her match and the viewer sees their relationship change.
