Ansford Controlled Assessment in Science

Introduction

This guidance relates to the Controlled Assessment for each of the separate sciences and Additional Science, all at Higher Tier level.

The total mark for this Controlled Assessment is 40 marks. This represents 25% of the total marks available for the relevant GCSE.

A total of 9 lessons will be available for completion of the assessment. There may be one additional lesson provided, at the start, to go over this document and for teaching of the science required by the question provided.

Work should be handed in on paper and will usually be hand written with graphs drawn by hand.

The coursework is broken down into four strands: S, A, E and R.

S = Strategy
A = Analysis
E = Evaluation
R = Review

Most strands consist of several sub-strands.

To achieve a decent mark in each strand, each sub-strand must be fully completed. In order to achieve 8 marks you need to make sure that you have satisfied all of the criteria for the lower marks.

Further Guidance

The mark you can achieve in any strand is affected by your spelling, presentation and grammar. Your work should be neat, legible, easily accessible to the reader, with scientific words and terms used correctly.

During lessons 1,2,3,4 and 5 you will be allowed to collaborate with others, talk, share your ideas and your research. During lessons 6,7,8 and 9 there will be a high level of control. You will be working independently and in silence.

Throughout the Controlled Assessment you may make use of this document. You may not, however, seek additional guidance from your teacher during the second phase, so make sure that you are clear about everything before lesson 6!

You may wish to use this document as a checklist to make sure that you have covered everything.
