Theories and Techniques of Counseling and Psychotherapy

Catalog Description
This course is an overview of the psychodynamic, cognitive/behavioral, and existential/humanistic schools of psychology, as well as corresponding models of therapy and frequently used assessment and therapeutic techniques. The primary focus in the course is on the development of both skills and rationale in the application of intervention strategies to treatment. Cross-listed and equivalent with PSY6530. Prerequisite: None.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Analyze the different schools of psychology and models of intervention. 2. Evaluate the rationale behind various intervention strategies. 3. Assess personal therapeutic styles, including strengths, areas for improvement, and skill in providing and receiving focused feedback. 4. Employ various models of clinical assessment and therapeutic techniques in a variety of settings and with diverse populations. 5. Discuss dimensions and dynamics of the clinical relationship. 6. Develop knowledge of crisis intervention and case management techniques. 7. Develop methods for helping clients identify issues and strategies for change.

Major Study Units
1. Approaches in psychotherapy – Discusses therapy systems, historical proponents, and theoretical constructs to customize students own style of helping clients. 2. Effective intake forms – Creates an effective intake form that will provide a therapist with sufficient information in order to execute a therapeutic strategy of treatment. 3. Psychodynamic therapies– Explains the historical and theoretical underpinnings of one of psychology’s oldest orientations. 4. Behavioral and Cognitive therapies – Explains the core theoretical concepts and techniques explaining the interplay of thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. 5. Existential/Humanistic therapies –Discusses the benefits of this therapy, as well as explores the differences between this therapy and other treatment modalities. 6. Client-responsibility – Describes the role of the client and how to effectively manage their responsibility and progress. 7. Intake interview – Uses learned clinical concepts in order to provide an intake and therapy session with an adult volunteer mock client.

Instructional Strategies
Reading assigned text and articles, and conducting critical analyses of articles and written materials are fundamental activities for this course. Students will also significantly learn by participating in discussions and role-play, demonstrating critical thinking applied to course concepts. The instructor will provide case study examples for students to use in learning to apply the concepts and skills taught in the course.

Course Requirements
Multiple measures of evaluation are used in the course, allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning in more than one way and giving consideration to individual learning styles. There are assignments that are due periodically and regularly; students are expected to manage their time and stay current with these assignments, as they build one upon another.
