WP-1 - Evaluation Essay
Write an essay that evaluates the value or effectiveness of something according to criteria you establish or identify in the essay.
The Genre: You’re familiar with the book and movie reviews that appear in newspapers, magazines, and websites. They are just one kind of evaluative writing, but from them we can identify the key components of the genre. First, there is the object to be evaluated. Often this is a single thing—a music CD, a scholarly study, a corporation—but it can also be an idea or process: the impact of a particular band on rock history, the importance of a new trend in scholarly opinion, or the management practices used by a particular sector of industry. Second, there are the criteria for evaluation. Is a music CD to be evaluated based on its potential for broad popular appeal (and sales), or on its ability to break new ground? Most writers of evaluations work to establish their criteria so that readers know exactly what elements the writer considers important and what the writer means by success or failure in each element. And finally, there is the discussion (or discussions) that connect the criteria for success with the object of evaluation. This “discussion” makes up the bulk of most evaluative pieces of writing.
* Your Evaluative Essay*
This evaluation essay is a performance review which evaluates the quality or effectiveness of some kind of artistic performance. You must choose something written or recorded (such as a book, movie, CD, TV program, or computer program, video game, etc.), or you might choose a live performance (such as a play, poetry reading, concert, or art exhibition).
Writers who review or evaluate on a regular basis establish or adopt criteria over time, and many of their readers know from experience what the reviewers praise or condemn in a book, movie, or concert. As a novice writer, you will have to be more explicit about the criteria you bring to bear on your evaluation....
