Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for any other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping in the sense that it is the act of excluding groups to privileges based on prejudice and stereotypes. Prejudice refers to the negative judgments or thoughts about a group or individual. They are formed without thought or knowledge and are often passed down through the family. Stereotyping is a negative generalization about a group. For example all black people are thugs or priests are child molesters.

What are the causes of discrimination?

Causes of discrimination vary. They can be caused due to race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or a disability. Discrimination can lead to hate crimes as seen in the KKK. They feel that their race is superior to all others; they turn most of their anger toward blacks. However there are times where another race other than blacks is targeted. The violence from the hate crimes often leads to death of innocent bystanders. Hate crimes are often a dominant group member acting out toward a member of a minority group that has little or no power.

How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?

Discrimination that is faced by different groups is the same in the sense that it is taking away their prodviledges based on prejudice. For instance a black person back in the day was forced to eat at colored places, drink at colored only fountains, and sit at the back of the

Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping, because discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights of individuals and groups due to prejudice. Prejudice is the unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand without the prior knowledge, thought or reason, while stereotyping is unreliable generalizations about certain groups. Discrimination can hinder a person from advancing in their life, holding them back from job opportunities as well as opportunities to buy their dream home and other opportunities.
