Equals Sign Essay Example
1. Angelica's service club is selling flowers for a fundraiser. Each flower costs them $0.50 to purchase. They set the sale price of each flower at the purchase price plus 40%. Write and solve an equation to determine how many flowers they will need to sell to make a profit of $500. Use complete sentences to explain what each number and variable in your equation represents. Write your solution in the context of the original problem. x(.50*.40)=500 In this equation x represents the number of flowers they need to sell to make a profit of $500. The (.50*.40) represents the equation to find out the profit of each flower. The .50 is how much each flower cost them and the .40 represents the 40% mark up. The x is equal to 2,500.
2. Max was solving the equation below and isn’t sure if his answer is correct. Explain to Max how he can check his answer and then help him identify any errors he made. Provide the correct solution in your explanation.
To check your answer you can plug in what you got for x in the equation and see in both sides are equal. I went ahead and checked for you and let’s just say that x does not equal 1. You did the first step right, but when you got here (below) you added the three into the parenthesis correctly but I can’t say the same for the 4. I not quite sure what you did to get -1 but the correct equation after that step should have been 9x+18=28x-4.
3(3x+6)
=
4(7x−1)
9x+18
=
28x−1
Since you messed up here this automatically makes all of the rest of you work wrong, but you did the math technique correctly after your mistake. The correct answer is 22/19 or 1.158.
3. Angelo took a group of people to the movies and spent $80 on tickets. Adult tickets cost $10 and child tickets cost $6. The equation to represent his cost is 10A + 6C = $80. The equation that was related to the problem is {x=4000-40p}. In order to find the price the first step: {40p} has to be added; which will place 40p on the left side of the equation. The next step is to place the x on the right side of the equation by negating x. Once (-x) has been applied the equation should look like {40p=400-x}. Then the third step would be to divide everything by 40. After dividing the equation by 40 you will find the price of the equation. The formula for the price should look like (p=100-25x).…

For computer paper for the next fiscal quarter, according to the information given by the superintendent, Mendel Paper Company will receive a profit of $240,000.00. If 30,000 units are produced and sold at $14.00 then the total sales will be $420,000.00. However it costs the company $6.00 to produce each unit. So, 30,000 units at $6.00 a unit costs the company $180,000.00. The total sales cost of $420,000.00 minus the cost of labor of $180,000.00 equals the profit of $240,000.00. News came in however from the vice-president of purchasing that the company has firm orders for 35,000 cartons of computer paper. So, if the company continues to sell each unit of computer paper at $14.00 then the total cost of sales is $490,000.00. It still costs Mendel Paper Company $7.00 to produce each unit, therefore costing the company $245,000.00. Making the total profit of computer paper $245,000.00.…
