Before arriving on my first day of instruction, I believed that my argumentation skills were at a reasonable level and as a result I was not going to learn an abundance in English 2, critical thinking and writing. However, this was not the case. When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. The syllabus of this AP English class also required several essays that were not bound to literary analysis. For example, the final essay I wrote for this class was a research paper; the prompt was broad – the paper was to be written about a group invisible to the American public. I decided to write about the plight of homeless people all over the country; once again, I was tasked with researching on my own and developing my own thesis, which improved my academic writing skills. AP English was a difficult course with a heavy workload, and I saw quickly that Mr. Magee did not tolerate whining. Therefore, I resolved to remain caught up in my daily reading responses, even when I already felt overwhelmed by other commitments. Yet despite his high expectations, Mr. Magee consistently demonstrated his trust in us, as students. He would give us the benefit of the doubt when we asked him for an extension on a paper, or when we handed in a reading response a class late. Mr. Magee trusted in our maturity to manage our own time, and he inspired me to deserve his trust and not to take it for granted. As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. When I first walked into AP Lang and Comp, I thought this is going to be another year filled with horrible writing and pointless reading but to my surprise I was wrong. On our first in class essay I scored a 4 slightly above average and ended the quarter with a score of 6 which was nearly double the average score. The jump from getting a score that was slightly above average to double the average was not one that came with ease, especially given the fact that I was absent quite often.
