Effective Time Management

Managing Time

• How much time do you have?
• What are your goals?
• What are your priorities?
• Do you have a schedule?
• Do you use a planner?
• Do you stick to your plans?
• Are you always on time?
• Do you put things off?

How much time do you have?

• There are 168 hours in every week.
• Make a list of everything to do.
• Figure out how much time it takes to do each item.
• Add the times.
• If you have more than 168 hours; you need to reschedule.

Time Management and Goal-Setting

• Make your goals SMART.
• Set both short- and long-term goals.
• Set specific deadlines.
• Combine your goals: School, personal, and career.
• Monitor your goal-keeping.
• Be flexible.
• Adjust your goals as needed.

Priorities

• What is important and what is not?
• What order do things need to be done in?
• Based on your priorities, plan out a schedule for the block, the week and the day.
• Planning may seem hard at first, but the more you do it, the easier and more natural it gets.

Do you have a schedule?

• Look at the course syllabus.
• Begin with blocking all set time obligations: Work, church, meetings, and so forth.
• Highlight all exams and project due dates.
• Identify routine homework days and study times.
• Do not forget to take a break once in a while.

Forms of Procrastination

• Ignoring the task, hoping it will go away
• Underestimating how long it will take
• Overestimating your abilities and resources
• Telling yourself that poor performance is okay
• Doing something else that is not very important
• Believing that repeated minor delays will not hurt you
• Talking about a hard job rather than doing it
• Putting all your work on only one part of the task
• Becoming paralyzed when having to make choices
