Janet Novack, Forbes Staff 5/18/2012 http://www.forbes.com/sites/janetnovack/2012/05/18/should-college-students-be-forced-to-buy-e-books/ For some time now, e-books have been the presumed future of higher education. The reasons why have always been pretty apparent: they have the potential to save students money, they’re a lot easier to carry around, and because today’s students seem to prefer digital to print when it comes to just about everything else, it followed that they’d feel the same way about textbooks (Novack, 2012).

Marc Prensk’s argument is that all textbooks should be banned and we should be using electronic textbooks. This way students and teachers will be able to access them from their iPad, iPhone, Tablet, or Nook. Prensky thinks that this would give the opportunity for more resources, and motivate the student to always read and refer to the textbook instead of just sticking it on the shelf where it would never be touched. “But I suggest that it 's time to go much further: to actually ban non-electronic books on campus.” (Prensky 1) He believed in freedom away from the page, and thinks that a collection of books and ideas in your pocket would be accessed more than books on a shelf. “Digital texts are also accessible anywhere, at any time, while…

The purpose of our research is to figure out the various ways of acquiring a textbook for the University of Cincinnati students. We want to help students minimize the cost of textbooks by helping them compare different options. We also want to find out what are the different options of selling the book afterwards. Our goal is to help students stay cost efficient but also find out convenient and easy methods of attaining the book as well as getting rid of it afterwards. From focus group discussion and interviews, so far, we have found out that the majority of students prefers to buy them online and used, and prefers to resell them afterwards as opposed to renting or other alternatives. We plan to execute more research studies, such as an online survey, to find out more details about what more students prefer and help our classmates with making the right decision.…

Technological advancements move at lightning speed, with the average device losing its edge over a new and better device after about two years. Businesses and private companies are keeping up, but classrooms are notoriously lagging behind. How many schools still use traditional textbooks? College students face many challenges; they have to make sure their classwork is done well, and completed in a timely fashion. Many have to find a way to balance school and a career as well as making sure that family obligations and scholastic responsibilities are both met. With all that to deal with the last thing most students want to worry about is carrying around books. Thankfully modern technology has addressed this issue with the E-Reader. An E-Reader will allow people to carry all of the books in their school library as well as personal books and magazines, right in the palm of their hands. There are many types of E-Readers, but two companies lead the field. The first is Amazon with the Kindle. The second is Barnes and Noble with the Nook. Deciding between a Kindle and a Nook can be difficult, but factors like price, features, and specifications can help a person pick which would be best for them.…

Moreover, E-books can affect the reading habits of people and actually get them to read more. Some people today believe that E-books are going to allow access to so many features that the library will not be needed any longer (“E-books”). Experts believe that some day all reading will be done on some form of computer screen (“E-books”). With the emergence of these E-books, there is more of a chance than ever that printed books will soon fade away (“E-books”). People feel that since e-books can just download the books for a small price, libraries do not even have to shelve the printed books (“E-books”). Experts also believe that there are so many advantages from the E-book that there is no reason to even own printed books (“E-books”). Supporters of the E-book believe that if libraries would upload all their books and materials on the internet, people would benefit more and would easily be able to access all the materials with the E-book (“E-books”).…
