ABSTRACT
This is a research report and an attempt to look into the issues and concerns in the Banking Sector and tries to analyze the views of the consumers and the banking environment.
We have analyzed the current offerings of E-Banking solutions offered by two major Pakistani banks and the consumers ' responses to these efforts. The overall research findings have been presented as objectively as possible and it points to the Security concerns hampering the growth of E-Banking within Pakistan. There is also a dearth of awareness in this mode of implementation.
Although E-Banking is one of the major ways to reduce transaction costs for the consumers, the consumers are vaguely aware of that. Similarly, the Banks also have a lot to gain from this platform but there seems to be not enough of an effort in this regard as the IT Department has been reduced to just a support unit of the organization.     Accepted 24th February, 2011 In the present day, total automation of banking operations is an imperative need for all banks to attract more customers, provide efficient services, and survive in the emerging new competition, apart from the profit motive which is the primary objective of the business. In order to achieve these goals of business, various e-channels have been developed through technology. ‘Internet Banking’ is one of the best alternative channels available to customers for quick, correct and efficient service at anytime and anywhere. The present paper is devoted to explore the extent of Internet banking in Indian banking industry. Time period taken for study is 2000-01 to 2006-07 because this period is the eye-witness of infant condition of IT and during the same period IT became mature. Simple statistical tools like average, standard deviation, co-efficient of variation are used to calculate the efficiency of various bank groups providing the service of I-banking. On the basis of analysis, the paper concludes that the private sector banks are on the top in providing the I-banking services to their customers and have high profitability as compared to other bank groups under study except foreign banks. The paper also highlights the benefits of i-banking to customers as well as to bankers and suggests some strategies with their possible solutions like to spread awareness regarding I-banking and to increase its area and scope to enhance I-banking services in India, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. In the above study, it is important to note the six pillars of electronic payment identified and stands out as roles contributing to the development of financial institutions by embracing e-banking. The study bases its facts on case studies previously carried out in Saudi Arabia and the extent to which adopting electronic payment has influenced banking performance. SADAD as used in the paper represents an organization in the region dealing with embracing e-banking in Saudi and analysis of its impacts. There are three main objectives which will be explained by the research findings in the discussion and concluding part of the paper. The problem statement of the study as mentioned in the introduction is to identify the role played by e-banking in the performance of financial infrastructure and its development. The study will thus identify the different benefits associated with the method and therefore encourage the institutions to embrace the technological change. The paper will use two specific measures to identify the extent to which banks benefit from the process and include ROA and ROE.
