There exists in the majority of people a schism between their public lives and their private lives. People should desire to have their public selves match their private selves as closely as possible. A rift between the two causes nothing but pain and suffering for everyone around those people and places a heavy burden on the spirit of the ones responsible. Trust and honesty are essential to our society and the truth should be complimentary, not earned. Richard Rodriguez, a writer and public speaker, expertly illustrates his own experience with this type of double life in his autobiography, Hunger of Memory.…

It is common for a person to have strengths they show off and are proud of, as well as weaknesses that probably would not receive as much exposure. Should a person have an equal amount of strengths and weaknesses, or is it common for one to have more of one than the other? Is it possible for strengths to be weakened, or the other way around? The April 19, 1925 Minneapolis Sunday Tribune review of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, referring to the classic tale as an “ironical panorama of the weakness of the strong and the strength of the weak,” understandably communicates the incongruous factors of strength and weakness of the characters Tom Buchanan, when dealing with his affair, Nick Carraway and his sense of judgment, as well as Jay Gatsby and his sense of hope.…

Determined to find exactly what altered masks can do to an identity, an experiment involving 18 female college students and a clinical trainee was conducted. Gergen’s intentions were to “find the factors of an individual’s choice of mask and how outward appearances and inward feelings of personal identity affect masks” (172). The main source of such analysis was the students’ self-evaluations after answering questions regarding their background and about themselves. With the interviewer showing signs of approval or disapproval when answering, led to strong influencing of the young students’ image of themselves. If the student received a positive reaction from the interviewer, she gained confidence while when receiving a negative reaction, they slowly began to change some of their answers to evoke the positive feedback from the interviewer. The overall conclusion of the experiment was “that it was easy to modify the mask of identity, but it says little about underlying feelings” (173).…

I can directly relate with this quote, I’m sure quite a few people can. So often, we act differently in private than we do with others. Of course, it’s all dependent upon who the ‘others’ are. For example, we may feel more comfortable being our true selves with our friends and become more reserved with colleagues. This is not necessarily how all humans behave, some folks have no problem being exactly who they are at all times no matter whose company they are in. I admire this quality when it is not coming from someone I perceive as obnoxious. Certainly, factors such as perception, culture, and the people we are communicating with will influence how we behave in public as opposed to private.…

Everyone has their own demons, and I certainly have mine.…

My self perceived strength were analytical, deliberative, discipline, focus, and intellection. I believe these strengths best suited me when I picked them out. But what I actually received was analytical, consistency, deliberative, futuristic, and individualization. The strength I identify with the most is deliberative, because I am a very indecisive person. I believe this only proves that I am deliberative even more so because I take my decisions seriously and I like to make sure I am picking the right one and one that I will not regret. I think ahead a lot and plan what needs to get down so decision making for me is difficult. Also, I anticipate some type of mishap or struggle in the future because this never go as smoothly as I plan. To…
