1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
Diversity is the variety of racial, ethnic, religious, and gender groups in America. Diversity is valued in the United States because is our primary source of our success and strength as a nation. (Down to Earth Sociology, James M. Henslin, 2007). America is made of people of every race, from every land and every religion. The founders of America created a society to accept different people and celebrate various cultures that they bring to our beautiful country.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrisms is using the standards of one’s own group, culture , or subculture to evaluate the characteristics of other groups cultures and subcultures, generally from the point of view that one’s own characteristics are superior.(Down to Earth Sociology, James M. Henslin,2007). Ethnocentrisms can be detrimental to a society because the members of other groups can lead to racism or violence within a society. It has a negative effect and is the main cause of many social problems, such as slavery and war.
3. Define emigration and immigration.
Emigration is when a person “leaves” his home country to live in another country. For example Mexican person crossing the American border illegally to settle in America would be considered an emigrant from Mexico. Immigration is when a person “comes” into a new country to live permanetly. For example a Mexican person crossing the American border illegally to permanently live in America would be considered an immigrant in the United States (Racial and Ethnic Groups, Thirteen Edition by Richard T. Schaefer, 2012).
