Computer Systems and Networking Group Assignment (2011/12)

Objective
This assignment intends to give you the opportunity to investigate the computer systems and network components of a company. Not only this assignment let you explore the technology needs by the company, but also let you know how to provide solution based on the requirements and its benefit versus cost.

Task
The target company is a toys manufacturer. Here is some information about this company:
1. There is an office Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong and a manufacturing plant in Mainland China. There are 20 clerical staffs stationed in Hong Kong office and 1000 workers in the manufacturing plant. The 2 managers, 3 product engineers and 10 sales representatives will have offices in both Hong Kong and Mainland China as they will travel between them.
2. The company will relocate to a bigger office in Fo Tan by end of this year. Since the existing computer systems and network infrastructure for all Hong Kong staffs which including clerks, managers, product engineers and sales representatives has been used for over 5 years, the management would like to replace them and also solve problems in existing systems after the relocation.
3. The management addressed the following issues for their existing systems and would like to have a solution.
a. The sales proposals and documents were saved locally on staff’s laptop computer, it is risky if they lost their computer or left the company.
b. Every clerical staff has their own printer which makes the maintenance and consumable costs high. The management would like to reduce printing cost and improve the printing efficiency.
c. The sales representatives will travel around the world to meet buyers and suppliers very often, the management is looking for an IT solution to reduce business trip expenses.
d. The latest manufacturing machines are capable to send alerts and machine status reports via email, the management would like the engineers can read such email
