MGG focuses on elections as a major opportunity to exercise good governance and elect new leaders. No one can deny that the Filipino’s colonizers have greatly affected our way of living. They have brought with them their culture when they settled in the Philippines. One of them is the Spaniards. The Spaniards’ colonization had a great impact upon our ancestors’ lives. They altered our views on religion, architecture, language, music, fashion, cooking and traditions. And I think it’s sad that, even until today, I can still see that these things that these Spaniards have brought with them are still within us. Their effect, their power is still so strong that we can’t ever be nationalists of our own country. It’s sad to realize that from the beginning we weren’t really free from them. We’re still wrapped around their finger because we’re still living the life we had when they were here. We have their blood, their culture and their religion. We have developed colonial mentality. We can never be free from them unless we change.…

The barangay is the basic unit of government in the Philippines. Unknown to many, it is where much of actual governance takes place, and where the government and the citizens meet face to face. More than a hundred roles have been assigned to barangays by the Local Government Code of 1991 and various special laws ranging from the delivery of basic services to women and children protection under RA 9262. It is no wonder that barangays are able to perform all of these obligations in view of their limited resources and personnel. Yet, we observe that they have also been given a significant role in a process that keeps societies intact, making justice work.…

Every Filipino dreams that one-day, we would be saved by a great leader who will pull us out of poverty and free from the dictates of other powerful nations. For more than once we have shown the world the power our people through bloodless revolutions that made us inspire and earn the respect of other nations. Plagued by amnesia, our resounding voices were easily silenced and our flaming spirit gone cold. We were unable to sustain the energy that we had... thinking that change will be that simple... that easy... that sudden. Indeed the Arroyo government survives not because of active support of the Filipino people, but because the alternative was unthinkable. For a while let us put aside our negative comments, we may not exactly know if the administration is religiously doing its job, but we can always assess ourselves on our own performance as followers.…

The President began his SONA by recalling how, nearly four years ago, a group of well-meaning people persuaded him to run in the 2010 presidential elections, assuring him that while serious problems hound the country, they expected him only to start laying the groundwork at least for permanent resolution of those problems. They assured him they would help him face the challenges all the way. He hesitated, but knew that he wasn’t raised to evade responsibility, and he could not live with himself if he did that. Thus, he said, began his long, difficult journey. He also took pains to thank the people, referring to them again as “ang aking mga boss,” for giving him affirmation in the recent May 2013 elections, by signaling their approval of the directions he was taking, by electing nine of his candidates to the Senate. Some are already saying that while he is currently the clear frontrunner to replace PNoy in 2016, Vice-President Jejomar Binay’s less than stellar record in practicing good governance could cause much worry among the business and international sector which can hamper our continued economic growth. 2016 is not just about fighting against corruption. It’s been three years now, since we elected PNoy with an overwhelming mandate. Up until now, he still continues to enjoy very good trust ratings with the latest SWS survey showing him with a net satisfaction rating of +64 which is unprecedented for a Philippine President that has served more than half of his term. While the first 3 years of his term have been aimed at promoting good governance and his anti-corruption agenda, the next three years should be aimed towards fulfilling the other half of his campaign promise which is eradicating poverty in our country. Let us remember that one major reason why he was elected into power was that our country was coming off a decade that was marred with rampant graft and corruption thus, the Filipino people elected PNoy based on…

This paper is to tackle current issues in our government that I consider a tele-novela which remains a box office hit. What I think about the ongoing saga regarding former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's (GMA) efforts to leave the country to get medical treatment abroad and the Aquino administration's efforts to stop her. Not to mention the controversial TRO issued by the Supreme court in connection with the refusal of the DOJ secretary to implement the ruling, and most specially, the infamous ‘electoral sabotage against GMA’. All these current issues affect the democracy of our country. The strength of democracy is measured, not by economic gains, but primarily by the strength of the country’s rule of law and its justice system.…

Our ideals as social beings are shaped in the context of our environment. First, we emerge to be the persons that we are through our relationships with our families, friends and neighbors; our associates in school or in the workplace, the people in authority: teachers, superiors and leaders in the different institutions or sectors. Of special influence are the people who have taught us life principles by their nurturing behaviors and good examples. Second, our societal realities determine the extend by which our social development as a people is achieved. The healthy interplay between the responsiveness of our socio-political structures and leaders, on one hand, and the active and responsible citizenship of the people, and other hand, are essential in ensuring a governance that is maka-tao at maka-Diyos and thus, promotive of social development.…
