Classical and Operant Conditioning
Classical and Operant Conditioning In 1889, a psychologist by the name of Ivan Pavlov began experimenting with dogs to study digestion by measuring their saliva. He discovered that the dogs “predicted” the arrival of food, leading to salivation. Although he is famous for his work on digestive psychology, he is known for his early impact on behavioral psychology. He described that there were things such as a neutral stimulus, unconditioned stimulus and an unconditioned response. A neutral stimulus is a stimulus that, before conditioning, does not naturally bring about the response of interest. An unconditioned stimulus is a stimulus that brings about a response without having been learned. An unconditioned response is a natural, innate, response that is not associated with learning. After conditioning it becomes a conditioned stimulus and a conditioned response. A conditioned stimulus is a natural stimulus that has been paired with an unconditioned stimulus to bring about a response formerly caused only by an unconditioned stimulus. A conditioned response is a response that, after conditioning, follows a previously natural stimulus. This is called classical conditioning. Below are a few examples.
Classical Conditioning 1:
On one media source a father decides to condition his four daughters with the sound of a cow saying “Moo.” In the video his daughters are sitting at the couch watching TV while the father is sitting at the computer. As soon as the sound “Moo” goes off, the father gets up and turns of the TV. The daughters look at him bewildered. After the first few attempts, the young girls are just getting mad at their dad for turning off the TV. At attempt 7 the girls do get up to stop their dad once they see him get up. The father repeats the process 7 times before the four girls are conditioned. The father plays the sound “Moo” and just sits there to watch the girls jump up and protect the TV. The father does this one last time and as soon as the four girls

Classical conditioning was developed by Ivan Pavlov 1849-1963, Pavlov worked with dogs to see how their digestive systems worked, Pavlov attached the dogs to a harness and he attached monitors to their stomachs and mouths so he could measure the rate of salivation, he noticed that when an assistant entered the room with food the dog would begin to salivate. Pavlov speculated that the dog was salivating because it had learned to associate with the assistant when the assistant was bringing food. This was when Pavlov developed his theory, food automatically led to the dog salivating, he then called this an unconditioned response. Pavlov then gave the dog food when the bell was rang to see if the dog would associate food with the bell. After a few trials the dog learnt that the bell was associated with the bell, eventually the dog began to salivate when the bell was rang without food. This was then named the conditioned response of salivation to the conditioned stimulus of the bell.…

    2. Pavlov explored the phenomenon we call classical conditioning, in which organisms learn to associate stimuli and thus anticipate events. This laid the foundation for John B. Watson’s behaviorism, which held that psychology should be an objective science that studied only observable behavior.
Pavlov would repeatedly present a neutral stimulus (such as a tone) just before an unconditioned stimulus (US), such as food, which triggered the unconditioned response (UR) of salivation. After several repetitions, the tone alone (now the conditioned stimulus [CS]) began triggering a conditioned response (CR), salivation. Unconditioned means “unlearned”; conditioned means “learned.” Thus, a UR is an event that occurs naturally in response to some stimulus. A US is something that naturally and automatically triggers the unlearned response. A CS is an originally neutral stimulus that, through learning, comes to be associated with some unlearned response. A CR is the learned response to the originally neutral but now conditioned stimulus.…

    4. In the experiment, Pavlov presented food, and the dog salivated. Then, he began to ring the bell before he presented the food, at first, the dog didn’t have response. Then, after he repeated this action again and again, then once the bell rang, the dog started salivated. Food was the unconditioned stimulus, the stimulus that naturally evoked salivation. Salivation was the unconditioned response, which is a response that occurs naturally. The bell was the conditioned stimulus, the stimulus that the dogs learned to associate with food. The conditioned response to the bell was salivation.…

During Pavlov's experiment dogs were hooked up to a machine that collected and measured saliva. He noticed that the dogs started salivating not only when offered food, but also in response to events immediately preceding the feeding. He referred to the salivation that occurred when the dogs where presented with food as an unconditioned response, an inborn reflex or instinct that did not require learning, caused by the presence of the food which he referred to as an unconditioned Stimulus; as food is necessary for survival it is instinctual to crave it. Through his experiments he discovered that if a particular neutral stimulus, with no inborn reflex response, such as a bell ringing, was combined with an unconditioned stimulus such as food then the dogs would learn to associate that Neutral stimulus with the Unconditioned Stimulus, and the neutral stimulus would trigger salivation on its own. The neutral stimulus had now become a conditioned stimulus, and the unconditioned stimulus a conditioned reflex,…

Classical conditioning was a theory developed by a Russian psychologist called Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936). He was working with dogs to investigate their digestive systems. The dogs were attached to a harness and Pavlov attached monitors to their stomachs and mouths so he could measure the rate of salivation. He noticed that the dog began to salivate when someone entered the room with a bowl of food, but before the dog had eaten the food. Since salivation is a reflex response, this seemed unusual. Pavlov decided that the dog was salivating because it had learned to associate the person with food. He then developed a theory. Food automatically led to the salivation response, since this response had not been learned, he called this an unconditioned response, which is a response that regularly occurs when an unconditioned stimulus is presented. As food automatically leads to this response, he called this unconditioned stimulus, which is a stimulus that regularly and consistently leads to an automatic response. Pavlov then presented food at the same time as ringing a bell (neutral stimulus), to see if the dog would learn to associate the bell with food. After several trials, the dog learned that the bell was associated with food and eventually it began to salivate only when the bell was rung and no food was presented. It therefore has learned the…

A process of behavior modification in which a subject learns to respond in a desired manner such that a neutral stimulus (the conditioned stimulus) is repeatedly presented in association with a stimulus (the unconditioned stimulus) that elicits a natural response (the unconditioned response) until the neutral stimulus alone elicits the same response (now called the conditioned response). For example, in Pavlov's experiments, food is the unconditioned stimulus that produces salivation, a reflex or unconditioned response. The bell is the conditioned stimulus, which eventually produces salivation in the absence of food. This salivation is the conditioned response…

There are two main different between classical conditioning and operant conditioning. The first one is (classical conditioning) forms associations between stimuli (Cs and US). (Operant conditioning) forms an association between behaviors and the resulting events. The second one is (classical conditioning) involves respondent behavior that occurs as an automatic response to a certain stimulus.( Operant conditioning) involves operant behavior, a behavior that operates on the environment, producing rewarding or punishing…

Classical conditioning is defined as ‘’ a learning process by which a subject comes to respond in a specific way to a previously neutral stimulus after the subject repeatedly encounters the neutral that already elicits the response’’ (Freedictonary.com, 2013). Classical conditioning involves forming a link between two stimuli having a learned response as a result. There are three stages in which this happens Stage one: Before conditioning, Stage two: During conditioning and Stage three: After conditioning. Stage one includes a repetitive stimulus, which will automatically get a response. This is called a naturally occurring stimulus (NS) For example, salivating to the smell of food is a naturally occurring stimulus. Stage two the process of…

Classical conditioning refers to the involuntary responses that result from experiences that occur before a response. It occurs when you learn to associate two different stimuli. It involves a stimulus which has no affect and it is called the neutral stimulus. The neutral stimulus can be a person, place, or thing. The neutral stimulus, in classical conditioning, does not produce a response until it is paired with the unconditioned stimulus.…

Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a potent stimulus obtains the ability to evoke an innate response that was originally elicited by a neutral stimulus. In classical conditioning, a UR is an event that occurs naturally in response to some stimuli. On the other hand, a UR is the stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without learning. A CS in classical conditioning is an originally neutral stimulus that, through learning, comes to be associated with some unlearned responses. Finally, a CR is the learned response to the originally neutral but now conditioned stimulus (CITE BOOK). These are the basic components involved in classical conditioning. Classical conditioning theory was first discovered and described…

Learning is more than a person sitting at a desk and studying off a book. Everything that we do is a result of what we have learned. We respond to things that happen to us, we act and experience consequences from our behavior, and we observe what others say and do. Psychologists explain our many experiences with basic learning processes.…

The idea of classical condition is one of the most notable learning techniques because it involves a stimulus rewarded for a certain response. Naturally, animals and human have unconditioned stimulus that triggers an unconditioned response. The most common connection is the correlation between food and salivation. Food naturally draws organism to it in order to satisfy a drive created by hunger to acquire homeostasis. A response is created because of the organism’s reaction to food, which is usually salivation. Classical conditioning is considered an effective way to train an organism to learn habits not naturally associated with certain unconditioned stimulus. This creates a conditioned stimulus. The once unconditioned response is now conditioned to respond to the conditioned stimulus, which is called a conditioned stimulus. An example of conditioned stimulus and response is the example of associating the school bell with food. Children are hungry by nature, but when the school bell is added, the children are reinforced to associate the school bell with lunchtime. Classical…

Our understanding of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning has allowed us to unlock many of the answers we sought to learn about human behavior. Classical conditioning is a technique of behavioral training, coined by Ivan Pavlov, which basically states that an organism learns through establishing associations between different events and stimuli. This helps us understand human behavior in an assortment of ways. It makes it clear that almost everything we do is based on patterns of stimulus and response. For example, if you were bitten aggressively by a dog as a child, you may be still scared of dogs today. That is because the dog caused you pain, which in turn caused you have anxiety towards dogs. Because you associated the dog with pain, and the pain caused you to have anxiety, therefore you brain associated seeing a dog with feelings of anxiety. Same thing applies to getting a text message. Let’s say you’re sitting around doing nothing an all of the sudden your phone vibrates. You’ll probably go and check to see what message you got. This relates to a classical conditioning experiment because you have associated your phone vibrating with getting a message.…

Classical conditioning is a phenomenon in which two stimuli are associated, creating a reflex response. There are three examples of classical conditioning. My first example is my boyfriend, he wears a certain type of cologne that I am used to smelling when I am around him. Now whenever I smell that scent I get happy. The cologne is a unconditioned stimulus and the reaction is a unconditioned response. Secondly, whenever I got surgery I was given pain killers after which made me sick. Even today when someone mentions pain killers or that kind of medicine I get sick. M last example for classical conditioning is my fear of flies. On television there was a show on how flies puke on everything they land on. Now whenever I am around flies I get scared and freak-out, because I don't want them on me.…
