Child Poverty in Africa More than 140 million children in North Central Africa live in extreme poverty (Child Poverty para2). Africa still has the world’s greatest number of infant mortality due to poverty (Child Poverty para4). Unfortunately, African children can live in and die from poverty; however, humanitarian groups such as Stand Up For Africa can offer these children some help. The future of this problem is unwritten. Africa includes some of the poorest countries in the world. Because of poverty in Africa one in six children die before they are five years old. Two million children under the age of fourteen are HIV positive. “200,000 children are sold every year as slaves and about 120,000 are participating in armed conflicts” (Poverty in Africa para2). About one third of these children are underweight. Poverty is spread out all throughout Africa. The Sahara Desert is very high in poverty because of the low percentage of rainfall.
Stand Up For Africa (SUFA) is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to improve access to education, health, promote and protect the rights of children, young people and women, and to provide opportunities for income generation. Between 2008 and 2012, SUFA is supporting development projects in Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria. They have recently sent over 100 laptops to Uganda with the help of the USA’s One Laptop Per Child organization. In the past five years, SUFA has helped Mozambique reduce poverty from 70% to 55% and has doubled the number of children in school. Kenya has brought 1.2 million children back into school by making primary education free with the help of SUFA and 1000 new schools have been built in Tanzania. There are thousands of nonprofit organizations helping out Africa.
