DIAGNOSTIC MODELS: AN INTRODUCTION

Traditional diagnostic models can be categorized as descriptive models or normative models. Descriptive models With descriptive models, the role of the OD practitioner is to illuminate “what is” for the client, and “what could be”. Within descriptive models, contingency theorists would argue that the OD practitioner facilitates change only, not focus. The client determines the direction of change and the OD practitioner helps the client get there. Most diagnostic models fit under the “descriptive” category. Examples include: ! ! ! ! ! ! Bolman and Deal: Four Frames Model Freedman: Socio-technical Systems Model Galbraith: Star Model Hornstein and Tichy: Emergent Pragmatic Model [Sometimes used in developing consultant or company specific models] McKinsey: 7-S Model Nadler and Tushman: Congruence Model

Normative Models With normative models, the practitioner recommends specific directions for change, prior to the diagnosis – the “one best way of managing.” Examples include: ! ! Blake and Mouton’s Grid [Concern for People/Concern for Productivity 9, 9]. Likert’s Profiles

Yet other diagnostic approaches include Levinson’s Clinical Historical Approach, patterned on a psychoanalytic approach to the client system.

Each is predicated on a particular theory/theories or perspective(s), and each intended to highlight and bring into focus a broad range of data and experience for purposes of diagnosis and intervention.     Away is a play written by the Australian playwright Michael Gow, published by Currency Press in 1986. First performed by the Griffin Theatre Company in 1986, it tells the story of three internally conflicted families holidaying on the coast for Christmas, 1968.     The courtroom work group is made of all of the people who have assigned jobs in the courtroom during the trial process. The courtroom workgroup consist of the judge whose duty is to protect the rights of the accused and the community while issuing sentencing. The defense attorney which is a licensed trial lawyer hired or appointed to defend the person accused. The prosecutor who represents the government and the interest of the community. We also have the jury who determines the guilt or innocence of the defendant by the facts and the evidence that is presented at the trial. The Bailiff is the court officer who announces the entrance of the Judge, calls for witness as well as maintain order in the courtroom. Next we have the Clerk of court. They are responsible for maintaining all records of the criminal cases. The court reporter is also a member of the courtroom work group. The court reporter maintains a written record of all that occurred during the trial. The role of the prosecutor is to seek justice, determine whether to charge a dependent with an offense, decide scheduling of cases, offer and acceptance of a plea -bargain and share evidence with the defense. The prosecutor determines which cases to pursue by choosing the cases that are in the best interest of the public. If the criteria for taking a case were more stringent we would have offenders who wouldn’t charge for small yet relevant crimes. This would lead criminals to believe that they could commit small crimes and not be held responsible for them. This would also make the crime rate increase. If the criteria for a case were less stringent we would be holding trials for petty crimes. For example if a person got caught littering we would be holding trial for them and wasting money when we could have simply made them pay a fee or do community service for their actions. I don’t think I would make any changes to the courtroom workgroup because it runs just fine now. If I had to make changes I would add…

    Historians and cultural critics trace the post-modernist hip hop movement which pioneered sampling and graffiti art to the 1970′s, New York, a movement rooted in the black nationalism of the black panthers post civil rights movement (Price, 2006). Hip Hop has become a dominant global youth culture with music, art, fashion, films and Tupac an icon within this culture a “Black Elvis”. Hip Hop has many different sub genres such as conscious, gangsta, party rap and with emcees in the different genres according to their subject matter. The paper will explore Changes a conscious rap song that was recorded by Tupac in 1992, at a time when African Americans were affected by the beating of Rodney King by Police Officers, which led to the Los Angeles Riots of 1992 (Johnson, 2009). The environment was politically charged and conducive for a song chronicling that moment in history. What is interesting is that the song was posthumously released in 1998 on Tupac’s Greatest Hits album, two years after Tupac died of gunshots wounds on the 13th of September 1996 (Scott, 1997). Tupac Shakur’s music is characterized by hard hitting hip hop beats sampled from different music genres and lyrics that criticize, the capitalist system that divides America into the haves and have-nots. The collective identity in Tupac’s music is identified in the struggle of the lower classes to find political, economic, social discourse in a capitalist society by chronicling from the perspective of a young black male growing up in post civil rights America. His work vocalizes the thoughts of the masses trapped within a modern slavery system (poverty and discrimination). The writers credited on the album sleeve are Shakur, T., Evans, D., & Hornsby, B.; Changes sampled the beat and part of the chorus from Bruce Hornsby’s ” The way it is”(1986) and appropriated it into a Hip Hop political anthem.     Jack Mezirow 's theory on the transformational learning process is discussed in chapter five, Learning Online and Lifelong Goals, (Alexander, Clugston, and Trice) (2009).     The four stages of the transformational learning process are identifying the problem, confronting the problem, finding a solution, and integration of knowledge. The first stage is called confronting the problem. This is a big integral part to any problem one may be facing in their lives. You have to first identify and recognize that there is a problem and admit that the problem exist. The second stage of the transformational learning process is confronting the problem.
