Cell Organelle Worksheet
Organelle Nucleus
Where found (plant/animal/both)
In animals it’s in the center of the cell while in plants it’s found in the cytoplasm.
What it does in the cell (functions)
It maintains the integrity of the genes and controls the activities of the cell.
Something that performs the same function in the “real world” It works like a CPU sending out messages.
Organelle Nucleolus
Where found (plant/animal/both)
For both animal and plants it’s within the nucleus of the cell.
What it does in the cell (functions)
To transcribe and modify rRNA and integrate ribosomal proteins to form immature ribosomes.
Something that performs the same function in the
“real world” Like an oil refinery taking crude oil and making it into gasoline.
Organelle Cell Membrane
Where found (plant/animal/both)
In animals it’s in the outer most layer of the cell and in plants it’s inside the cell wall
What it does in the cell (functions)
To protect the cell from its surroundings.
Something that performs the same function in the “real world” Like a Ziploc bag.
Organelle Cytoplasm
Where found (plant/animal/both)
The thick liquid residing between cell membrane holding organelles except for nucleus.
What it does in the cell (functions)
Holds the organelles together it also acts as a buffer protecting the cells genetic material.
Something that performs the same function in the “real world” Like hair gel holding things into place but not letting the outside elements penetrate.
Organelle Ribosome
Where found (plant/animal/both)
Free ribosomes are found throughout the cytoplasm while attached are connected to ER.
What it does in the cell (functions)
Read and translate the cells genetic codes then reproduce the proteins that the code represents.
Something that performs the same function in the “real world” Like a calculator.
Organelle Mitochondria
Where found (plant/animal/both)
Found in the cytoplasm
What it does in the cell (functions)

which he called ‘cells' this in itself unbeknownst to him, was the discovery of the fundamental unit of all living things. In 1838 a botanist called Schleiden derived the theory ‘The basic unit of structure and function of all living organisms is the cell.' Over 150 years later this can be regarded as one of the most familiar and important facts within the biological fields. Drawing of cork cells published by Robert Hooke 1665 The Cell itself and use…

Cell Organelles Nucleus Its function is to control the cell's activities and retain the chromosomes. The nucleus is bound by a double membrane, the nuclear envelope. The nuclear envelope has pores in it to allow the transport of mRNA. The cytoplasm like material is called nucleoplasm which contains chromatin (coils of DNA and histone proteins), it is chromatin that condenses to form chromosomes during cell division. Within the nucleus is a small spherical body called the nucleolus which…

[pic] Cells and Their Organelles The cell is the basic unit of life. The following is a glossary of animal cell terms. All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane. The cell membrane is semipermeable, allowing some substances to pass into the cell and blocking others. It is composed of a double layer of phospholipids and embedded proteins. Color and label the cell membrane tan. Plant cells have an additional layer surrounding them called the cell wall. The cell wall is made of nonliving…

Biology- cell organelles assignment Animal cells: Introduction: An animal cell is called a eukaryotic cell; it has a cell membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus. The cell surface is covered by a membrane only. The cell membrane is strong and keeps the cell together even though it is thin and flexible. The cell membrane also controls what goes in and out of the cell e.g. nutrients go in and waste comes out. The cytoplasm is inside the nucleus and it controls the cells activities. An animal is…

Eukaryotic Cells Worksheet Provide a list describing at least three differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells: 1. While Prokaryotes contain just one copy of each gene, eukaryotic cells have two. For such reason, prokaryotes are known as haploid and eukaryotic as diploid. 2. While Prokaryotes see some nonessential genes being encoded into extra-chromosomal plasmids, such activity is typically absent in Eukaryotic cells. 3. The own way DNA is present in each type of cell has different…
