Can Money Buy You Happiness Essay Example
Can Money Buy You Happiness?

Society today, with the way advertisement is, and how famous people are betrayed in the news and magazines, are showing us that the more money you have, you could have lots of happiness. As a matter-of-fact you could have anything you want. It can help get you out of trouble when needed. Have your own T.V, show or radio show. Immigrants are being told that your dreams can come true working and living in the United States. The way that I was raised was sure different than today's thinking that money will buy you happiness.
Advertisements has brought us to thinking that the more money someone has, look at all the happy things that can happen to you. You could buy anything you want, you won't have worry about anything. Even when you are born into a wealthy family, some of those people think that money brings happiness. They don't have to worry about if they will have enough money for rent or food. Some think that it will keep them from being prosecutor ed or going to jail. There is a few celebrities that I have notice that are famous and now their kids are famous too. It makes me wonder if the kids worked as hard as their parents of becoming famous, or that their parents helped them get into that role. Famous people I'm sure have their ups and downs, but you really don't hear about them until they run into the law. And then they try saying that they are broke and they lost everything by making a bad investment or someone close to them took it all.
Look at all the immigrants trying to come into the United States, I have seen programs saying “Come to America, and you can own your own business and become rich.” Some live with more than one family, in a house or apartment. Better than what they had every imagine before. Some have made it and they send money back to their relatives, hoping that some day they can get enough money to bring the rest of the family over. To them money does bring happiness and riches.

After reading, “ Why Money doesn’t buy happiness,” of Sharon Begley, I have read another essay similar to this one in high school before. This question has been asked for years, everyone has different answers for it, “Does money buy happiness?”- By the author, the economy where people try to get as much as for what they sell as they can, when where people try to pay as little as they can for things they want to buy, the more they can earn/save money, the more contentment they have. The main purpose of this essay is to convince people that not the more money you have, the happier you must be, there are a lot of unhappy rich folks out there are depressed and suicide everyday, but it does give you more choices, which mean money bring you more…

One of the main arguments in this book is that money only equals happiness up to a certain financial point, in other words, even when growth makes us wealthier, it doesn’t make us happier. Actually, the level of ‘happiness’, as measured by a major survey taker, peaked in the United States in the mid-1950s, and has been on a steady decline ever since, even while the amount of material possessions, hours worked, house square footage, and cars driven has…

“The extreme emphasis upon the accumulation of wealth as a symbol of success in our society militates against the completely effective control of institutionally regulated modes of acquiring a fortune” (Merton). Have you ever looked around and noticed how much we emphasize money? Money controls so much of the American Dream that is causing a problem. Americans believe the amount of money you have is the end all be all in life and they are willing to do almost anything to gain it. The American Dream has deviated from the original meaning to mold to society today and the desire to constantly want more money. Money has been placed on a pedestal in the United States and because of this the American Dream has become…

Money isn’t the source of making someone happy. Happiness is achieved by people accomplishing their goals in life and becoming successful. In the book, The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay was dedicated to being rich, but that wasn’t his goal. In order to reach his goal in life and be truly happy he needed to be with the one person he loved and that was Daisy. Similar to this idea in the book, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort the main character always wanted more and more as he could never settle for what he had. Because of this, he continued to get wealthy. Even with all the money he made, Jordan realized that to actually be happy he wanted to have power over everyone and be able to do what he wanted. Money can always buy materialistic…

People say money doesn’t buy happiness but today we live in a generation where people seem to think money makes the world go round. Previously the root of the American dream was “the story of doing well, of conquering disease and going to the stars and defending freedom” as said by Roosevelt in his first inaugural address. But that value that Americans used to cherish so greatly has altered. “The fast life I done seen on the screen is addictive. Money and clothes I done dreamed about…” this is proof from one of the great rappers of our generation, Jermaine Cole, that society has programmed its youth to be more materialistic and to have thoughts that revolve around money.…

For centuries, mankind seeks to answer the question: Can money buy happiness? Therefore psychologists are exploring the relationship between wealth and happiness for decades. They came to the conclusion that money can make people happy if it involves moving from a state of extreme poverty into the middle class, but they do not have a noticeable impact in the future. It means that people feel glad and safe when they have enough of money to satisfy daily needs. It is important to understand, what really makes people happy besides the living routine. Jarod Kintz quotes “I think the key indicator for wealth is not good grades, work ethic, or IQ. I believe it is relationships. Ask yourself two questions: How many people do I know, and how much ransom money could I get for each one? ”I think it is safe to say happiness have many aspects. The real versions of well-being that plays out every day are the ones based upon an individual experience, perception and values.…

“It seems only natural that happiness should flow from having more money. Even if they don’t admit it, people still behave as though it were true. More money means you can have what you want and do what you want.” (Dean 2008). Wealth and possessions do not equal happiness because no matter how much money and gems you have you can not buy feelings, but only comfort, also if you are working hard for more money you are experiencing more stress and negative emotions.…

Happiness is the result of achievement, as individuals, we must figure out what we want to do once we’re out in the real world; whether it’s becoming rich and famous, or just owning a regular house in a middle class neighborhood, we all have goals that we are looking to achieve so that we can be happy but the only way that happiness can be obtained is through hard work. As Bill Rancic stated “The American Dream is still alive out there, and hard work will get you there. You don’t necessarily need an Ivy League education or to have millions of dollars startup money. It can be done with an idea, hard work, and determination.” (Rancic)This quote is explaining how anyone can achieve success in America, through hard work and perseverance. It doesn’t matter how much money an individual has, hard work and effort can get anyone anywhere in life and land anyone any kind of job they want. A lot of businesses look for people who are hard working, determined, dedicated, and enthusiastic. They’re looking for someone who’s innovative,…

According to the article, Does Money Buy Happiness? written by Don Peck and Ross Douthat, it is clear that things that make people happy on earth include drink, food, entertainment and merchandise all of which are acquired with the availability of money. Peck and Douthat argue that despite the fact that money cannot buy everything in life, they facilitate happiness. The authors provide evidence by stating that richer nations are generally happier than poorer nations because they have stable economies while the poorer nations suffer from unstable economies (Peck and Douthat, 2003). This is because richer nations offer its people with the chance to acquire several things through credit which enables them to buy goods or services in large quantities. Consumption also enables people to acquire a sense of status because they obtain numerous items and upgrades all through their…

People believe if they had more money it would make them happier. Certainly having more money can make things easier at times, but it cannot take away all worries in life. Research has been done that money does not do anything to make people happier once they have their basic needs covered. It’s an illusion to think a celebrity or rich businessman is happier than the average family man or woman. It is crazy to believe that money can reduce stress and worry because most people want to live slightly above their current means and stress about bills, belongings, health regardless the amount of income. For example one study stated, “People report needing 40 percent more to reach a level they consider sufficient. If you earn $50,000 per year, you’ll “need” $70,000. But if you get a raise and make $70,000, you’ll soon “need” about $98,000. The more you have, the more you find you need” (Brooks). Another example is in the story, “The Rocking Horse Winner,” Paul gives five thousand pounds to his mother to make…

Happiness isn't something you can buy with money. I feel like society today is all about money. The so called "good" jobs are usually the jobs that make the most money. I know money is pretty powerful, but it still has its limits. Money can't buy us happiness nor health. In my opinion, being happy isn't as easy to achieve as people think. Sometimes, it is even possible for happiness to spread.…

Why, then, do so many of us bother to work so hard long after we have reached an income level sufficient to make most of us happy? One reason is that our ideas about the relationship between money and happiness are misguided. We usually think of having more money as allowing us to buy more and more of the stuff we like for ourselves, from bigger houses to fancier cars to better wine to more finely pixilated televisions. But these typical spending tendencies buying more, and buying for ourselves are ineffective at turning money into happiness.…
