Assumptions:
Working time: 8 hours/day x 6 days/week
Weekly off: 52 days/year
Annual Leave: 30 days/year
Public holidays: 8 days /year
Therefore, no. of working hours/staff = 8 x (365-52-30-8) = 8 x 275 = 2200
Requirement of Nursing Manpower:
(Nurse / Patient Ratio) for wards
VIP room: 1:2
Deluxe rooms: 1:3
Private rooms 1:4
General Ward 1:5
Labor room 1:1
ICU 1:2
Requirement for the three shifts (AM/PM/Night) is as follows: (for 100% occupancy)
7.00 am – 3.00 pm : As Above x no. of beds
3.00 pm – 11.00 pm : 85% of the morning shift
11.00 pm – 07.00 am : 75 % of the morning shift
For Example, for a ward with 30 beds distributed as:
VIP=1 / Deluxe room=3/Private rooms=16/Gen.ward=10 beds,
Nursing requirement at 100% occupancy will be as follows:
AM = 1+1+4+2 = 8
PM = 85 % of AM shift needs = 0.85+0.85+3.4+1.6 = 6.7
Night = 75% of AM Shift needs = 0.75+0.75+3+1.5=6
Total = 20.7
Calculation of Full-Time Equivalents (FTE):
As per the above example,
FTE per day (8 hours x No. of Staff) = 20.7 x 8 = 165.6
FTE per year = FTE/day x 365 = 165.6 x 365 = 60444
Assume
a) 2 nurses to be on Maternity leave of 120 days each per year b) Each nurse is entitled for 30 days paid leave per year c) Each nurse is entitled one day off a week d) Each nurse is entitled to take 8 days off in lieu of Public holidays every year e) Attrition at a rate of one nurse each year
Corresponding FTEs will be:
a) Maternity leave – 2x120x8 = 1920 hours
b) Annual Leave – 20.7 x 30 x 8 = 4968
c) Weekly off – 20.7 x 8 x 52 = 8611.2
d) PH off – 20.7 x 8 x 8 = 1324.8
e) Attrition – 1x8x365 = 2920
Total = 19744
Total FTE/ year = 60444 + 19744 = 80188 hours
Total FTE / day = 80188 ÷ 365 = 219.7
No. of Nurses required = 219.7 ÷ 8 = 27.5
Rounded off to 28
Assuming:
a) No. beds=20; Nurse: Patient ratio = 5:1;
b) Bed
