Hub and spoke route network
— Hub and spoke - route network structure by which a carrier utilizes an airport to route a broad range of Origin & Destination markets. — Hub = Central node or airport — Spoke = Nonstop routes radiating out from the hub connecting with various other markets — E-D, A-B, C-B etc. O&D market is routed via hub; market cannot sustain frequent nonstop service

Types of hubs
— Simple hubs – little or no coordination between in- and outbound flights. Spokes scheduled independently.

— Complex hubs - flights are co-ordinated to arrive in
“banks” (allow more and fast connections between flights but poor utilization outside banks and minimal interline traffic).

    BlueSky flies three airplanes between Houston and three cities, Chicago, Miami, and Phoenix. These three cities are the spokes connected by the Houston hub. A few times each day the three airplanes fly from the spoke cities to Houston.     2. Southwest’s quick turns allowed for them to have twice the industry average number of flights per plane per day. Its planes were in the air 12 hours a day (compared to the industry average of 8 hours). Southwest did this by offering no frills, low cost flights to and from secondary airports. Management’s focus was the short haul, point to point strategy, which advocated short flights to uncrowded airports for quick turns. Southwest also chose to use the spider web system because the hub and spoke network tied up too many valuable assets at too few pressure points, whereas a spider web system allowed maximum flexibility to disperse assets and reduce stress in the system. Southwest’s 10 – 15 minute turns became an advantage and allowed them to be more profitable by being more time efficient, offer more flights, and spend less time on the ground and instead, in the air where they were making money. Using collected information and Porter’s “Five Forces” model, we will provide information about the attractiveness of the airline industry and provide a recommendation based on that information. Industry Background We will be outlining the Scheduled Air Passenger Transportation, NAICS number 481111 “This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing air transportation of passengers or passengers and freight over regular routes and on regular schedules. Establishments in this industry operate flights even if partially loaded. Scheduled air passenger carriers including commuter and helicopter carriers (except scenic and sightseeing) are included in this industry.1” We will focus on domestic travel, that is, travel within the continental United States. We have also limited our scope to include only flights that carry passengers or passengers and cargo. Flights carrying exclusively cargo will be excluded. Geographic Scope Airlines performing passenger flights within the continental United States will be focused on. Flights outside the continental United States and flights carrying only cargo are not included in this analysis. Each airline is located at a number of locations in major cities, at major airports, all over the country. Some airlines have hubs at multiple airports all over the country.
