Date: July 14, 2010
To: Our Customers
From: John Q Smith
Subject: Change in business hours at X clothing store

Due to the current struggling economy we will be changing our business hours in an attempt to save money on store operations and allow our employees to work fewer days per week in an effort to save on gas.
Our stores will now be closed on Sundays. Monday through Saturday, our stores will open one hour later and close one hour earlier. I understand that this may affect the convenience for, you, our customers but we feel that this is a necessity in these hard times.
At current, there will be no stores closing but we will also not be opening any new stores. Our employees are expected to provide the best possible service, as they always have.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the potential inconvenience. We hope that you will remain our loyal customers.

Town, AZ 12345

Dear Employee,
Due to the current struggling economy we will be changing our business hours in an attempt to save money on store operations and allow, you, our employees to work fewer days per week in an effort to save on gas.
We will now be closed on Sundays. Monday through Saturday, we will open one hour later and close one hour earlier. I understand that this may affect the convenience for our customers but we feel that this is a necessity in these hard times. As a full time employee, you will now work four, 10 hour days per week. If you are a part time employee, we will adjust your hours according to the hours per week that you work. We will attempt to consolidate all your hours into a 1, 2, or 3 day workweek.
At current, none of our stores will be closing but we will also not be opening any new stores. You are expected to provide the best possible service to customers, as you always have.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the potential

New retail space We opened nine new stores in the year, at Giffnock, Gorleston, Whitefield, Kidderminster, Granton, Northallerton, Blandford Forum, Clifton (Nottingham) and Holyhead. Two of these (Giffnock and Kidderminster) were replacements of existing stores and two (Blandford and Northallerton) were former Safeways, which had been closed since the acquisition due to their small size. Our decision to reopen them reflects our growing confidence in the operation of, and return from, smaller stores, and we have been pleased with their performance. A further two of the stores (Gorleston and Clifton) were previous Co-op/Somerfield stores that we acquired and converted to Morrisons. In both cases we saw very significant uplifts in sales compared to those achieved under their former ownerships, and as a result we were pleased, later in the year, to agree the acquisition of a further tranche of stores from the Co-op/Somerfield that we will open in…

In our textbook “Marketing” by: Grewal/Levy - Chapter 8: Section Two (pg. 242), I was shocked to read and learn that IKEA is a store that is open seven days a week. Additionally the text says this is same case all across the globe — except France, that has a law against retailers selling on a Sunday. France accepts Sundays to be a relaxing leisure day to spend with time with family and friends or just to enjoy some alone time. IKEA was ordered $700,000 last week for staying open on Sundays in a Paris suburb. The company says Sundays provide 20 to 25 percent of its weekly revenue in France (usatoday30.usatoday.com). Furthermore, IKEA attempted to challenge the law and be able to work on a Sunday, though I do not know the accurate information…

By closing the stores in the "higher" crime rate areas the business has affected the employees who worked in that area. They have also sent the message to the community that the area they were in was not "good enough" for their stores. This gives the community a sense of abandonment and also gives the community a negative opinion of the complete chain of stores. The remaining stores that are open are going to need to make up for this by giving some positive acts for the community to take notice of.…

To prepare for this simulation, I researched the financial impact of various scenarios. I used Microsoft Excel to run what-if scenarios to determine the best and worst case outcome. I also analyzed the risks of remaining closed versus staying open, such as loss of potential profit by remaining closed and scarring the store’s reputation by opening on Sundays. I also prepared several versions of a contract to present to the other team for consideration to cooperate after the first four weeks and during our first opportunity to negotiate.…
