Bowling Alley Turned into Church: Santisima Trinidad Parish
Bowling alley turned into church, repository of religious art in Bulacan
By Levine Andro Lao

The Diocese of Malolos has inaugurated a past leisure destination—a bowling alley in front of a resort—as one of its parish churches in Bulacan, formally naming it as Santisima Trinidad, after the religious persona to whom the locals have been devoted to for more than a century now.
“This structure where we now have our church, as we know, had been a bowling alley. But it no longer looks as one,” said Bishop Jose Oliveros during the consecration of the church structure last June 15.
“It has ceased to be a place for leisure to become a place of sacred communion. This is because of the collaborative effort of the community and devotees of the Holy Trinity from other towns,” he added.
The symbolic consecration—highlighted by the blessing of pillars, walls, and altar with holy water and oil—was celebrated in the presence of the devotees, the clergy of the diocese, and guests Bishops Cirilo Almario and Deogracias Iñiguez.

Religious art
Indeed, Santisima Trinidad has no semblance of the bowling alley it had once been. Although the old framework, including the foundations, were retained, the structure now carries a fresh look, not typical to older churches in the provinces.
In front, a towering 30-foot stone sculpture of the Holy Trinity by local artist Danilo Ortega stands. The topmost image is a dove, representing the Holy Spirit, while on the left side is a portrayal of the Son and on the other side is God the Father. Beneath these images are the angels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.
Carved on the doors are stories of the Bible, rendered by long-time wood carver Antonio Magtoto. The panels are dedicated to the each persona of Santisima Trinidad, and to Mary. The last door, the jubilee door, meanwhile tells the story of the devotees.
Also, at the background of the altar, is a painting by artist Aris Bagtas, who has also worked on other religious art in other

The centerpiece of the piece is obviously Mary, though she is on the right side of the painting. In one hand she holds an open bible, and she holds her other hand up in prayer while she is looking down with her eyes almost completely shut. She has a halo surrounding her head as gold rays shine down on her from god, carrying Jesus to her. There is also a dove surrounded by gold above her head. This was a very common Christian symbol used to represent the Holy Spirit.…

The church was designed in such a beautiful way that people come just to see the decorated chapels. There are two of these chapels - the lower chapel and the upper chapel. The lower chapel is highly decorated, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the reign of King Louis IX, this area of the cathedral was reserved for palace staff. The architecture in this chapel is stunning; the ceiling is painted to appear a starry sky, the walls hold representations of the Apostles, and even the floor holds tombstones of reverends and treasurers of the Sainte-Chapelle. The one negative thing about the lower chapel is that it is quite dark. This is a contrast to the upper chapel. The upper chapel is light and full of color, and is known as the “Highlight of the Monument.” The decorations show art and religion working harmoniously, and there is a sense of holiness in this area because this is the chapel in which the Holy Relics were kept. Although both of these chapels are very beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful thing of all in this cathedral are the stained glass windows. Appearing in dominant colors of blue and red, there are about 600 square meters of these stained glass windows. The art dates back to a long time ago - the twelfth century craftsmanship is ancient, yet so perfect to the cathedral. What is even more stunning about these window panes is that they can be read in arches that go from left to right. In fact, they tell…

Located at the entrance of the third floor that was designated as Europe, I chose a three dimensional sculpture that is called the Archangel Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan by Henry High Armstead. This sculpture was started and finished in the year 1852. There was no art work next to the piece I chose but on the other side of the wall that it was on there was a painting called The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape by Alessandro Tiarini. The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape is an oil painting done on a canvas in 1640. This sculpture is a cast statue based on one of the saints. It was created to show the strength of Saints and how they were loyal, and angelic hosts of heaven out of a bronze material that was shaped and carved. The art work was purchased by the…

    St John the Divine

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is simply breathtaking. From the exterior to the interior of the cathedral, you can find plentiful amounts of highly sophisticated bodies of work. Before laying a foot inside, the massive bronze doors containing forty-eight relief panels depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament catches the eyes of many. Also, many note the exquisite statues and carvings of saints and Jesus all along the Western Front of the Cathedral. Once inside, the enormous pilier-cantonnés stand along the nave aisle, where it erects up into the ceiling. Eventually, the columns meet with one another at four angles, creating a quadripartite vault in the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows that lines the entire cathedral strikes your retina at all different angles as you rotate your body. A little beyond the crossing, the high altar contains a magnificent cross, as well as an iron tomb of the man who founded the cathedral. If you focus the eyes just behind the choir, you will glare at seven stunning radial chapels—each one representing an apostle, a patron, or immigrant. But out of all the marvelous artwork within and outside the chapel, there was one particular window that caught my attention.…

The rituals and community, along with material expressions, are the outlet in which believers are able to practice their faith and come together with members of the same faith for a sense of wellbeing and togetherness. The Catholic Church views their churches as holy and sacred places, where followers can come to be cleansed of their sins during services and confessions of their sins to the Priests of the church. This tradition provides an ease of mind to their followers and a place to in some aspects “escape” from their…

    The Annunciation Analysis

Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31). Symbolism can also be found in the frame of the painting. The three arches at the…
