Energy Budget of plants:
Plants are the source of energy for all of us and all living things on earth.
Energy is the currency of the universe = $ (work) * Energy budget= must be balanced
Energy budget * Plants collect and process energy * Basic source SUN * Diffuse – need to collect a lot to get fixed energy * (sugar)- LEAVES = solar collector * Everything must be paid for and pay for itself over time

Plants are sentient beings * Perceive environment and respond to it appropriately * Plants grow in response to: the wind, sunlight, root growth * Autotrophs- Photosynthesis * Heterotrophs- eat (engulf, ingest, absorb) * “see at many wavelengths of light” specifically detect, identify colors. * Detect and respond to pressure- (physical= wind, touch, other plants,) * Efficient elegancy designed for life as a photosynthetic autotroph

Senses of a plant
“see”- light, many wavelengths
“hear”- respond to different frequency of sound
“feel”- respond to physical pressure wind weight
“smell”- respond to molecules in the air
“taste”- wet surfaces of cell membranes
Biological- design of living beings and function of parts and pieces whole organisms

Autotrophic * Self feeding * Photosynthetic light putting together collecting lightsugaroil, proteins, pigments, enzymes

Concentrators of Energy
Original source of energy in the universe, sun * Energy released from molecules coming apart explosively= electrons in light * To use this energy we need: solar collectors
Solar collectors: * Leaves= most variable organ in plants * Plants look the way they do and they dont move around because: to be successful in PS autotroph
Plants have indeterminate growth * Keep growing their whole life- constantly: * Making new roots, stems, leaves.

What do plants take to survive?: 1. Sunlight 2. Surface area leaves >> solar collectors 3. Stability

Michael Pollan’s film, The Botany of Desire, opened my eyes to the complicated relationship between people and plants. Pollan opened up with the following statement: “Flowers. Trees. Plants. We 've always thought that we controlled them. But what if, in fact, they have been shaping us?” (Pollan, PBS) I paused the film and took a few minutes to let this soak in. I was always under the impression that we were manipulating plants to our benefit only. I never thought that the plants were gaining something as well. The narrator explains, “The Botany of Desire examines this relationship by telling the stories of four plants that ensured their survival…

Man has come a long way from the caveman days and so has our understanding of the world around us. Humans have always used plants and animals in one capacity or another, yet when a person thinks of the phrase 'plants and animals', they automatically begin thinking about the differences between the two. Well I say that plants and animals have been known far too long for their differences. And as different as they seem, plants and animals are very similar in the following areas: reproduction, human uses, and the requirement of water. Even though plants and animals can be distinguished from one another, evolution has bridged the gap between the two more than most people realize.…

You have been looking at the different types of diseases that affect the human body and the natural defence mechanisms that maintain health. In this last part of the module you will look at how increased understanding has led to the development of a wide range of strategies to prevent and control disease. In this part you will have the opportunity to: • discuss the role of quarantine in preventing the spread of disease and plants and animals into Australia and across regions of Australia. • explain how one of the following strategies has controlled and/or prevented disease: - public health programs - pesticides - genetic engineering to produce disease resistant plants and animals • perform an investigation to examine plant shoots and leaves and gather first-hand information of evidence of pathogens and insect pests • process and analyse information from secondary sources to evaluate the effectiveness of quarantine in preventing the spread of plant and animal disease into Australia and across regions of Australia. • gather and process information and use available evidence to discuss the changing methods of dealing with plant and animal diseases, including the shift in emphasis from treatment and control to management or prevention of disease.…

Without plants, almost all life on our planet will end. Plants provide oxygen for animals and humans to breathe and they provide food for several animals. At present, there are 260,000 known plant species in the world. Plants are found in fresh water, in oceans and on land. A few plants live in soil that does not provide sufficient nutrients, therefore, they eat insects for nourishment. Bug-eating plants include sundews and pitcher plants. Here are 10 strange facts about plants you didn't know.…

Both Plant cells and solar cells absorb sun light and convert it into energy. For plant cells it is chemical energy and for solar cells it is electricity. That is, much of the sunlight that hits a solar cell is either reflected or absorbed as heat, without inducing an electrical current. These two types of cells help us humans to survive, plant cell by giving us CO2 and O2 and solar cell by providing us with electricity. In addition they are both effective because both act similarly in the latent heat of condensation, absorption and re-radiation and last but not least reflection.…

Plants have a way of teaching humans how to better the world around them. They create and use “green” products and chemicals everyday that we as a society are just starting to learn how to use to make our lives greener. We can also use these chemicals to help keep our crops healthy and reduce our dependence on other countries. Lignin and Suberin are becoming more popular in the manufacturing world as greener materials than what we currently have. They are being used for things such as cork flooring, biofuels, and as a replacement of plastics.…
